What causes Impotence ??

Posted by sm100378 on February 14, 2006, at 11:08:50

Hi all,

I will make this short as possible. During the span from April03-Sept03 (reading my reports), I was on Lexapro 10, geodon, ritalin 20, and depakote. I was able to have sex with out ANY problems regarding impotence.

Fast forward to today....I am off (lex, depakote, geodon, ritalin) and ON (wellbutrin xL 300, effexor 37.5, and clonazepam 0.5). Now, without the help of a small piece of viagra (at least 50mg), I cant seem to keep hard.

If in 2003 I was on an SSRI and more potent meds, and now I am on meds that claim no sexual problems (wellbutrin, except for effexor but a low dose), what is going on?

I should note that I was put on effexor 37.5 after I started experiencing sexual problems during summer 05, so that really cant be thrown into the equation....

Any suggestions would be very helpful. Thank you in advance.

Hi SM

Clonazepam has been claimed to be associated with more sexual dysfunction than other benzodiazepines. Switching to another long-acting benzo such as Librium or Valium might be helpful.

It's a difficult question. I was going to jump in yesterday, but I hoped someone better would come along. First off, exercise if you don't right now. Improves blood flow and testosterone. I can't remember effexor, but you are right, the other two shouldn't necessarily cause that. If it's really a problem, you may have to go to a urologist. There's some kind of postage stamp test where they put tearway tape on you at night, and if it breaks, they know you have normal nighttime erections. If a doc determines everything normal is working medically, then it could be a partner problem (real trick subject here, I'm older than you. I do great with my partner, rarely bother without anymore) I take a similiar med combo to you, so it really could be a side effect that is less common. Don't know what else to say really except don't let it become a psychological hangup and self fullfilling prophecy. hang in there.

Thanks for both responses. Interesting about clonaz being the culprit....

I went to my primary doc and he gave me a blood test and all three numbers related to impo/libido were done (testosterone, etc, etc) and everything was in range. I went to a urologist and he said right off it was the meds, no matter if they say low sexual problems. He asked if I get an erection with viagra and he said since I do, that means normal function....

I dont know where to find stamps where they arent like the new ones (sticky already and single..not like on the roll and person licks stamps.ANY SUGGESTIONS?

P.S. What does sleeping erection have to do with impotence?

I wasn't putting the pieces together

The viagra proves the plumbing works. The nighttime erection thing is how they used to confirm that the body was doing its thing when left to its own devices. It sounds like you are way ahead of me on this one if you've already done the med work up. (oh sorry I cross posted with you ed)

I think it's the effexor. My 2 cents worth for the day.

I see why you would say that, but the problem started summer 2005 and i was only put on effexor december 2005.
