Can Depakote effect anxiety THIS much?

Posted by becksA on February 5, 2006, at 13:52:07

I thought I did not need the depakote (my cyclothemic DX was very tentative, yet I'm also on Klonopin at the same time for Social Anxiety.
We tried tapering off the Depakote , and it seemed like my anxiety got worse again. Is this a withdrawal symptom or can depakote really help with my anxiety?
(Needless to say I'm going back up with the depakote to see if it gets better)
Thanks

Depakote can help anxiety. It has a strong gabaergic effect, and is actually used sometimes in refractory GAD. I would withdrawl slowly.

hmmm so now that leaves me with the question of did the anxiety go back up because i withdrew too quickly, or was the depakote truly helping with the anxiety.

Withdrawing from many psychiatric meds too quickly can cause anxiety.

I personally found that depakote did help with anxiety. I kept a low dose on board for a while to help in this regard. Too much caused depression though.

Taurine may be effective to help depakote withdrawl anxiety.

Well if this helps, heres a situation. Was given depakote to aid parnate many moons ago,by day two i felt so flat and depressed i swore it was devils candy.

Recently in a post i stated i found a good parnate combination which seems for now to work, however i was noticing a touch of mania or how do i say, just too much when i took parnate, why i did what i did i dont know, but i cut the smallest pieace off a depakote tab,in actual minutes that excess stimulation stopped dead.

I have been doing this over a week now with the same exact results, now i think to myself if just this small pieace is doing this,my GOD was the orginal tab too much for me,in fact i find depakote so powerful in small doses that if the pieace isnt just right i devolp a negative COCKY attitude and begin to become a a-hole,more so than normal.I think now though i got the size of the pieace down, its very small,id say prob 10 mg.

Point here is im not usualy subject to placebo, and if i noticed such a small dose so signifitcly, and the high dose as well, where i wanted to die, then yess i would say to you youre on a very accurate track taking the withdrawal of depakite more serious.

Its quite powerful,good luck.

thanks guys, and i will keep it updated. I was down from 1250mg to actually just 250 a day for a few days....That's when I really started to notice it. (THat taper took about a week, but I've always been known to be able to handle any drug comingg off it cold turkey very easily...i.e. effexor, xanax, etc. Anyway I'm back to 1000mg for the past couple days, and Ill go back to 1250 probably on my next dosage. I'll let you know if anything happens.

Thanks

so im back at the 1000mg daily limit which I think is going to help the anxiety once again, but I feel depressed....could this come from a quick jump down, then jump up in the dosage (only temporary?)

(I went from 1250 daily for a month, then tapered to 250 daily for a few days, anxiety went up, now back up to 1250 after 3 days....

thanks

Just because a drug company can't hold rights to a substance doesn't mean it is not helpfull.

Taurine is one of the ingredients in red bull and other energy drinks. It has anticonvulsant and properties and is helpfull for anxiety. I found that taurine 500mg-2g was pretty much a similar feeling to depakote.

In the alternative treatment of bipolar, taurine is used fairly freqently.

I posted this above but then I found this thread...
I was taking Epilim (Valproic Acid Family) and it did calm me down to the point of being a walking vegetable with everything else I was on at the time. I'm still trying to piece together everything that I went through back then and which drugs worked for me and which didn't. After reading your posts, I didn't put 2 and 2 together until I realised that my anxiety did come back after I stopped taking it but I didn't care because I was felling really sick and lethargic so I went to the hostipal and the doc did some blood work. He sent me to another doc 4 days later to get my results. My liver function test was off the scale, which is a very common side effect and everyone on this drug should have this checked regularly. I was never told about this so that is why I stopped taking it and went back to valium instead to smooth out my anxiety. Thanks for jogging my memory, it has been very foggy. I only take valium when needed or mogadon for sleep these days, everything thing else I have stopped for 5 months now and I'm feeling pretty good. I'm still putting alot of things together and this board is helping me greatly.

I found it really did help me with anxiety. Paul
