Should Buspar make me THIS tired???

Posted by thuso on January 22, 2006, at 20:19:54

I was put on Buspar about 3 weeks ago (along w/my Welb. XL). I'm sensitive to meds, so we started really slow. I was doing 5mg for 9 days and then did 7.5mg for 8 days and after mentioning my tiredness I was told to go back to 5mg while we wait for some labs. I'm only taking them at night right now. Ever since I started taking the Buspar I have been getting an average of 2 hours more of sleep a night and always feel like taking a nap. The longest I've slept so far on the Buspar has been 16 hours. I was pretty darn out of it.

Is this normal? I know Buspar is supposed to be very mild. Unfortunately, I can't even tell if it's helping my anxiety because all I've been able to do is sleep. I've been too tired to be anxious! hahaha!

If Buspar doesn't work, I don't know what the pdoc is going to do next. What in the world could be the next thing we try? Any ideas?

is Buspar your only med? What have you tried so far other than Buspar for your anxiety?

As stated in my post:

> > I was put on Buspar about 3 weeks ago (along w/my Welb. XL).

Tried Zoloft...messed with my head too much. Even at only 12.5mg (half of the 25mg in the starting pack) I was getting such vivid dreams and nightmares that I feared going to sleep. Plus I would get bursts of intense anger. Stopped Zoloft pretty quick because of all of this.

Then on Welb. XL...took a little of the edge off, but still have plenty of anxiety/stress. Also hit me hard at first, even at an extremely low dose. While most people get anxious...I got depressed and lathargic. Very slowly (and I mean very) we got me up to 300mg, but even that is really pushing it. We want to try and bring me down because of my initial reaction at the 300mg.

Now trying to add Buspar. Not sure if that will work because of how much it is knocking me out at such a low dose. If I feel like this on only 5-7.5mg of Buspar, I can't even imagine what Xanax or Klonopin would do to me! hahaha! Hopefully, my head will start to get used to it and this exhaustion will disapear.

I seem to be very sensitive to meds. Like when I take pain killers or muscle relaxants...I fall asleep within 30 minutes and I'm asleep for 17 hours straight. The longer I take any of these kinds of meds, the less reality seems real. I hate the feeling!

Buspar made me so tired I could hardly walk. Other anti depressants and meds seemed to be all side effects, no benefit.

Klonopon has been the only drug that has worked and it's has worked great not only for generalized anxiety, but for social anxiety.

It's odd to me that something like buspar knocked my on my can, but 2mgs of klonopin just makes me normal. Of course I didn't start at 2mgs.

My doc said that benzos like klonopin have a different effect on people with anxiety disorters. For example he said if he took 2mgs of klonopin it would knock him out, but for someone like me, it doesn't.

Anyway, I noticed your comment about what you thought klonopin might do to you and thought I'd share my experience and what I've heard. Good luck.

For what it's worth:

Buspar used to knock me out, even at 10 mgs a day. And then I realized that it was because I was drinking orange juice with it. The label says no grapefruit, but in my experience, anything with citric acid makes Buspar much stronger. Now I just avoid that stuff and it's fine.

If you aren't eating/drinking any citrus, then I would try taking another SSRI with the buspar so you aren't so tired.

Feel better,
jflange

Why can't I stay awake????!!!!!

Ok...I am utterly exhausted! I keep taking 3 hour naps as soon as I get home from work and then a couple hours later fall alseep again for the night. So far, for 1/3 of January I have slept well over 10 hours a day! And I'm still getting about 2 hours more of sleep a day than usual. Argh!!!!

It is just so hard to believe that such a low dose is making me this tired. I know it isn't anything medical because I've had everything checked. And even though I've been depressed the last 2 months, my sleep shot up as soon as I started the Buspar. Moods and attitudes have stayed exactly the same. What is this stuff doing to my head to make me soooooo tired?

Too bad Wellbutrin knocks me down also. Right now I could really use the stimulating effects that most people seem to get from it. <sigh> :-\

Well...2 more weeks at the 5mg/day and then time to experiment with the 7.5mg/day. Let's hope my head starts to get used to this stuff. <sigh>

This is the end of the thread.
