MAOI and hypertension episodes: recommendations?

Posted by peridown on January 14, 2006, at 8:39:43

Hello everyone,

I am looking for current information/recommendations on the following:

1) medication to carry with me in case of hypertension episode (I've seen various mentioned, not sure what is currently recommended, has/has not been useful to people.)

2) accurate automatic blood pressure kit

If it makes a difference, I live in the states.

Thanx for any help,
G

Nifedipine liquid-fill capsules (Procardia) are sometimes prescribed. This is controversial however due to the risk of serious side effects due to an abrupt fall in blood pressure. I'm not sure how relevent this is to MAOI users though. An MAOI hypertensive crisis is characterised by an ultra rapid rise in blood pressure in an individual whose blood pressure was previously normal, or at least near normal. A rapid fall in blood pressure due to nifedipine would probably be more dangerous for an individual who was suffering from chronic hypertension, especially if cardiovascular damage was already present.

Ed,

Thanx for the info on Procardia. I am looking into it and will certainly mention it to my doctor.

Have you heard of Hydrochlorothiazide (or chlorothizide) being used?

Hi G

No, I have never heard of hydrochlorothiazide being used to treat an MAOI-tyramine hypertensive crisis. Hydrochlorothiazide is a very useful treatment for chronic hypertension though.

My doctor did not want to prescribe an anti-hypertensive. He said none of his colleagues prescribe them, although I know some on this board do carry them. For blood pressure monitoring I have a Omron HEM-637. It is very easy to use and I got it on Ebay for like 60 dollars I think. I got it before I started Nardil so I was able to get a baseline blood pressure reading. good luck.
