can Parnate increase GABA like Nardil does?

Posted by chess on January 11, 2006, at 19:31:13

i know that Nardil elevates the level of GABA in the brain, but can Parnate also elevate the level of GABA too?

I don't think it does directly. Nardil decreases an enzyme that metabolizes GABA. I don't think parante has this property.

It may increase GABA indirectly, thought its effects on monoamines.

Parnate increases GABA(B) receptor activity in the cerebral cortex. (Effects of stress and tranylcypromine on amphetamine-induced locomotor activity and GABA(B) receptor function in rat brain.

GABA(B) is the sedative receptor
GABA(A) is the anxiolytic receptor
right?
that's why drugs they're working on (like ocinaplon) only affect GABA(A) receptors
benzos affect GABA A + B receptors

Well, GABA-B agonism typically causes muscle relaxation (like Baclofen), I think GHB mainly effects that receptor subtype, also.

I could be wrong here but i thought on that site biopysh i saw a small study on the difference between nardil/parnate.In it something was said to the effect while we know nardil results in a gaba increase, that parnate actualy DECREASED overall gaba, and was used to show how to counter act a overload of gaba from nardil,i could have gotten that out of it when it was saying something else, but thats what i remebered reading, ill look for it to post.
