Can Wellbutrin cause suicidal thoughts?

Posted by Jimmyboy on December 19, 2005, at 15:28:19

I have been on Wellbutrin 300 mg about 3 wks now . and have tolerated it real well. There are many things I have actually liked about it.

Generally , in the past when I have been depressed, it was the kind where your thinking is real sluggish, no motivation, just like your body is tired and weak..

Since I have been on Wellbutrin these type of symptoms have gone away... I take it in the morning, it wakes me up, I am alert all day, motivated, my thinking is sharp, so it has really helped in that regard.

But ever since i started it, I have just been really sad.. sentimental for the past ... and feeling like there is no hope and even thinking about suicide. Its not that I want to do it or feel like I am going to .. just thinking about it every now and then... None of this stuff happened before..

I am not automatically blaming the medication, my circumstances suck too.. but they did before I started taking it and it just seems different now....

Any thoughts or feedback would be much appreciated.
Thanks,

Jim

Yep, it can. Try reducing your dose back to 150, and see if that helps. If it does, stay there unless you need to go back up, but stay there until your body adjusts. 300 might be too high, or you might have gone there too quickly. Then again, Wellb. might not be the thing for you.

yes be carefull of any unusual thoughts or feelings.I am unsure of your whole situation but SSRIs seem to have a very nasty reputation of suicidal thoughts and (in my opinion) anything that has the potential to make people feel suicidal should be avoided if things like this start up.(arina)

I have quit taking the Wellbutrin because of that ... I have dealt w/ depression a long time and taken a lot of drugs and have not really thought of suicide at all in over 10 yrs .... the fact that it started right after I started taking the Wellbutrin made me think it was best to quit taking it, whether that was the real cause or not...

Wellbutrin was without a doubt the best Antidepressant I ever took (most effective, fewest side effects) HOWEVER -- the first time it was tried on me I too wound up in the "rubber room" 1) The dose was begun too high (300mgm)
AND 2)I am one of a cadre of folks who cannot metabolize Wellbutrin and SSRI's properly together. ( I was on Prozac at the time)
My experience the second time around was with a VERY SLOW build up and no SSRI's and, while it took awhile to get to, I did very well on 200mgm SR taken at 8am and 4pm......
