Preventing Tolerance to Stimulants

Posted by temoigneur on December 10, 2005, at 1:10:15

I'm wondering if anyone knows of any way to attempt preventing tolerance to caffeine. I've found that it potentiates the prozac well, and with the combo of zyprexa, valproate, clonazepam, in addition to prozac, I find that caffeine is essential to maintaining any mental clarity.

If tolerance to caffeine can't be prevented, (I know it can be an individual thing), can anyone suggest a smooth stimulant. And what if anything, (DXM??) can be taken to prevent tolerance from developing tolerance to the stimulant.

I'm wondering about concerta, I used to take ritalin but it gave me horrible mood swings, would the valproate help with that. I'm reposting a bit here, you'll have to excuse my redundance, I forgot what I said.

If Ritalin didn't work, Provigil might. Nicotine prodcuts (patches, gum, sprays) help some people...I guess you could try smoking, but thats a bad idea. Good nutrition can help alot; some people seem to get a boost from high-dose antioxidants (COq-10, alpha lipoic acid, that kind of thing)...this may or may not work for you, but it probably wouldn't hurt anything. Changing your source of caffeine may help; both Yerba Matte and Coffee seem to have as-yet unidentified compounds that provide a stimulant effect *in addition* to their caffeine content...this may or may not be true of other teas and caffeine pills.

Stimulating ADs might help.Wellbutrin might help; Pamelor is an option, but its a TCA so the side effects are sometimes pretty bad. If you I remember correctly, you're taking neuroleptics. Reducing your dose and/or switching over to non-drowsy alternatives (Abilify, maybe Molindone) might help you out somewhat.

Good luck!

Concerta is so different in release than Ritalin that it almost acts as a different med. I could not handle plain Ritalin, but loved 18mg Concerta.

Can I ask what you take it for; I take it in combination with prozac and other things to combat anxiety/OCD, the AP's leave me so sedated I can't get much done I have no drive unless I have some caffeine. Maybe I'm obsessed with Concerta, but I would be interested to know what effect ritalin previously had on you and what you take it for now. Thanks

hi! could you elaborate on your diagnosis? Im sure you shared it before, but I seem to have forgotten what it was. Maybe you could decrease the AP and/or the Valproate? Valproate tends to be pretty sedating..maybe you could switch to Trileptal or Keppra? Good luck!

Currently I'm trying Adderall XR but am going to go back to Concerta for ADD symptoms, lack of motivation, etc. Adderall XR is giving me nervous energy versus the calm effect Concerta seems to give me. I never took plain Ritalin for more than 2 days because I felt paranoid and uncomfortable on it.
