My Doctor subscribed Effexor yesterday in place of the Lexapro I was taking. After reading the pros and cons (about 50/50) on this drug, I am skeptical about taking it. Do I need to be this afraid of it?

I think the only way to really know, unfortunately, is to try it.
I think I'd be a little weary of it too but I have two friend's on it that it has been a miracle for.
I think it just depends on each person.
I hope you find some answers and find what works for you..

Hi,
My doctor also switched me from Lexapro to Effexor. I felt fine on the Lexapro, but gained about 15 pounds in 4 months on it! I have now been on the Effexor for 3 weeks and have lost about 3 pounds. I just don't feel as hungry. However, my husband said I "seemed happier" on the Effexor. Just have to wait and see.
Once again..........everyone is different! Just thought I would share my experience....
Good Luck!

Effexor has worked for me. I love it, but I'm finding I'm having mega problems with memory and brain zaps, especially after I was put out last feb to get my wisdom teeth out. That's when all the problems started. But it's worked. Usually at this time of year I'm doing horribly but now, it's okay... just a little homesickness

My husband and 13 yr old daughter both took Effexor for a period of time... I believe it definately worked for both of them. I know others who take it & have had positive experiences. For my husband though, the side effects were tough--excessive sweating, and decreased sex drive & performance. He eventually weaned off (should have gone MUCH MUCH slower...it was rather rough at times...) and now is doing pretty well on 5HTP & SAMe. My daughter weaned off VERY slowly with no problem. She didn't really have any side effects while taking it, UNLESS she forgot a dose--that was bad. Dizziness, etc., so DON'T forget each day! :-) I agree with other others..you won't know if it'll work unless you try. Good Luck!

Heya
Never taken lexapro and not sure of side-effects but ive been on effexor for about 7 months and its really helping. started on 75mg and have increased slowly to 225mg. Each time increased felt side-effects (headaches, dizziness, sweating)but once taking for 2 weeks the side-effects went. I still suffer from sweating but my depression is so much better its worth it!
I also lost about 20 lbs when I went on effexor though lots usually report weight gain, suppose we are all different but I'd say give it a go!
Good luck xx

Thank you all for your support. I started taking the Effexor last Tuesday. I felt ok...the side affects have been minimal. Just feeling a little tired, but then I felt that BEFORE I started taking it. I've only taken 4 pills, but I think I feel better already. I'm starting to not give a sh*t about somethings that have been going on in my life, so that's good, that's where I want to be. Maybe it's just psychological.??? I think I'm going to like this better than Lexapro.

Hi,
Can you tell me how much Effexor you had to take before the depression lifted?
I took Effexor for a whil but only a low dose (125mg I think) and didn't get any benefit from it, although it relaxed me a bit.

hiya
once I started taking 225 mg it took about 2 weeks for them to settle into my system, but I'd say after a month they really made me feel much less depressed.
To be honest at the time I didnt think they were helping - I suppose I was expecting an instant&major change but it was very gradual. My friends noticed it more than I did too, I wasnt as moody&was more into doing things I used to enjoy before I felt this way.
It is a slow process and I know how frustrating it is but give them time
Also see someone to as I think my progress was a mixture of the tablets and CBT xx
This is the end of the thread.
