Deprenyl with an MAOI? Safety concerns

Posted by Tom Twilight on November 9, 2005, at 9:45:28

Hey everyone

I was thinking of adding some Liquid Deprenyl (Selegiline citrate) to my 60mgs of Marplan/Isocarboxazid

The reason I'm thinking of doing this is that although Marplan is working OK for depression and anxiety, it is not doing much for concentration and motivation.
I still often feel very rough in the mornings, and Coffee has stopped helping me.

I think that 5-10mgs of Deprenyl would probably be safe with Marplan, because Deprenyl only inhibits MAO-B at that dosage.
Unfortunatly I think I will need a higher dose of Deprenyl, what are the dangers of high dose Deprenyl with an Ireversible MAOI?

Has anyone tried this combination?

I know Declan takes low dose Deprenyl with 10mgs of Marplan, but at this dosage I doubt theres much danger of intaction, higher doses might be more dangerous.......

Any thoughts?

I said Declan takes 10mgs of Marplan

Actually he takes 10mgs of Parnate! (I think!)

Sorry, I'm tired!

Hi Tom!

Sorry I can't help you with your question, but I just wanted to say hello and I hope you're doing alright? I hope the sleep's better?

I write a long winded email to my GPs the other day as they pride themselves on being a 'beacon practice' or something, but I was horrified to see that out of 11,000 patients, only 43 are on there special care register thing, for mental health, guantaneeing a set standard of care....but they had like a biliion patients on asmtha, low tyroid etc and I wanted to know why they didn't do more for mental health. I mean mental illness is probably more (or at least equal to) dehilibating than some of the other categories. It makes me so mad! Even they are so condsending about depression. Sorry I'm going on, but if you're interested, have a look:

Sorry to go on (and digress).....I am probably just as fed up with mental illness and the NHS as you are......

Hi Tom,

Are things rough in the mornings because you've had a terrible night's sleep?

Deprenyl in any dose above low dose would aggravate insomnia. (I take 1mg of the citrate, insomnia stops me taking more.) I don't think you'd need more than a few mg/d. You might need a decent hypnotic as well.

Deprenyl has so little seratonin effect that I don't think 5mg would present any problem.

Declan
