effexor xr vs. cymbalta weight gain

Posted by tiggytig on November 7, 2005, at 22:13:15

I have been on Cymbalta for about 2 months and have experienced about 10 pounds of weight gain. This is the heaviest I've been since I gave birth 12 years ago. Nothing in my life has changed, diet or exercise. I told my md that this was somewhat counter productive to the benefits of Cymbalta, and he switched me to effexor. He told me to taper off of Cymbalta at 30 mg. a day, then take a week off, then begin the effexor. Has anyone had a similar experience? Is there less of a chance of weight gain with effexor? Can I switch meds sooner?

thanks,
tigs

I'm starting to find this whole argument on AD's confusing. I took cymbalta for around 3months last year. Gave it up when it did nothing for depression. So is effexor supposed to help with wt loss? Read so many posts on using wellburtin too to help with energy and wt loss. Fondly, phillipa

Hey there!
First off, I'd make sure the taper was really slow to avoid or minimise any withdrawal symptoms....I'm not familar with Cymb. but I am with Effexor. I'm afraid to say that I gained weight with Effexor - not much and it plateaued after a few months.
Wellbutrin is commonly added to counter the side effects of ADs although I didn't lose weight on it either.
But this is just my personal experience - you might be different! And I guess if you're aware of it, then you can at least try to avoid eating too much, exercising regularly etc.
