Please help, need some medicine advice!!!

Posted by Jimmyboy on November 8, 2005, at 21:02:50

I have some sort of bipolar, althoughth I would say that 99% of the time it manifests itself as depression and anxiety. I will fluctuate from feeling normal to "depressed" for periods of about 3 months. When I am depressed, I am not "sad" but more lethargic, cloudy headed, anti-social which is accompanied by anxiety.

I had taken Serzone for almost 10 yrs ( I have also been taking Lithium - 900mg/day for about 4 yrs) it helped somewhat but by no means was ideal. I mainly stayed on b/c it did not have the sexual side effects associated w/ SSRI's. To me it is not worth it...

In April , I was shocked that Serzone had been taken off of the market. Since then, life has been hard. I tried Wellbutrin for a few weeks, but lost 10 lbs and quit taking it. I stated taking Sam-e and immediately started feeling better. In fact , I am positive that I was hypomanic for about 2 and a half months. I hate to say it, but it is the best I have felt in my whole life. I knew it would not last , but enjoyed it at the time. Eventually the Sam-e quit working and I have been depressed for the last two months.

Does anyone have any advice on what med's I should try?

PS- I also had a full blown manic episode requiring hospitalization about 10 yrs ago, the doctor thought it was triggered by me taking Zoloft ( yet another reason I am leery of taking SSRI's)

Any help/advice would be much appreciated!

I had a Rage on Zoloft 150mg about 1 and half ago, i threw my barbel out my window, destroyed pictures that i regret badly now.

Zoloft i dont think is the best for everyone.

Serozone im sorry about. I might suggestion TCA antidepressants.

Im sorry this is happening.

SSRI's are complicated. Prozac is the only one i feel that im stable on. Its slightly stimulating, and there is no really side effects that i can tell. Cymbalta (Serotonin Norephinerine Reuptake Inhibitor) is a novel antidepressant, I took it for about 9 weeks and did see results, i wouldnt say its for social anxiety, but it not an SSRI.

There are many other that can respond maybe with better advice.

But best to you.

Matt

Generic nefazodone is available, although 'name brand' Serzone is not.

Depression, anxiety, bipolar...the antipsychotics are great for these combination of symptoms. (I hate the word antipsychotic though). They're actually strong serotonin receptor blockers and stimulators at the same time with some mild dopamine receptor blocking and stimulating mixed in. Stick with zyprexa, seroquel, or abilify. If you try one and don't like it after two weeks, go to another...no long drawn out trials needed. They're all quite different. But you can get the mood stabilizer, the antidepressant, and the antianxiety, all in one. Try to stay with low doses.
