Valium (diazepam) - once daily, bid, tid ?

Posted by sdb on October 22, 2005, at 15:48:55

Hi!

How do you take the Valium; once daily, bid, tid?
I would be interested to compare the Valium usage compared with some other long-acting benzos.

Thank you for sharing information.

Hi S,

During the first few days of treatment, diazepam has a short duration of action and is best given tid. Once you've been taking diazepam on a daily basis for several days or weeks, it has a long duration of action and can be given less frequently than other long-acting benzos.

Technically,I believe qid is best because diazepam's 1/2 life in the CNS is really short, contrary to popular belief. It is longish and nordiazepam is really LONG in the BODY, but the CNS is where it counts. Highly lipophilic; fast uptake, distribution, exit. Most people seem to eventually use diazepam for a buzz followed by chlordiazepoxide "maintenance" if that makes any sense. In that case, I think you can get away with bid. I believe it also depends upon the dose. For instance, you can do 2mg qid or 10mg bid; practically speaking, it's just what feels right.

I forgot to mention that different dosing schedules are used fro different disorders, such as seizures, anxiety, bowel complaints, etc.

Chairman tell that to my pdoc. She thinks l5mg a day all at once at night for sleep is enough. But right now with all my added stress especially since I'm moving six hours away and she only provided me with two weeks worth and I have no new pdoc yet. So how do I get valium when it's gone? And you know hard it is to find a non benzophobic one. And after thirty some odd years of a benzo my brain must be wired to need them. Any thoughts on how to get them or how to find a pdoc in Charlotte Nc? I don't think you can get on the telephone and say hey I'm new to the area and need valium? So I guess it's withdrawal time and seizures maybe I just don't know. Why are some pdoc's so stupid anyway? Thanks Chairman, Fondly, Phillipa
