After over 2 Years go from Zoloft to Paxil?

Posted by DanielJ on October 17, 2005, at 9:35:53

My son has had a terrible acne problem since going on Zoloft. He has taken doxycyclene to
help but I read in this forum that Paxil has no
problems with acne. Would it make sense for him to go from Zoloft to Paxil?

Have you asked his pdoc about the acne? Maybe it's not related to the antidepressant at all. Or call a dermatologist and ask. If he's a teenager it just may be his age. Fondly, Phillipa

paxil to replace Zoloft is it strong enough?

Posted by DanielJ on October 18, 2005, at 13:37:16

I am considering asking my son's Pdoc to switch
him to Paxil. Many earlier post say it it isn't acne prone like Zoloft. My son never had terrible acne until he started on Zoloft. Any help would be appreciated.

I did the reverse once--paxil to zoloft switch. Bascially, my doc took the paxil dose and multiplied it times 5 (so my 30mgs/paxil=150mgs/ zoloft), and I had pretty good results for 6months or so. I guess you could divide the zoloft by 5 to get the paxil. Just make sure your son takes his paxil at the same time **every day**--so, if he wakes up and takes it at 8am, try to stick to that. Paxil has an extremely short half life, and withdrawals **SUCK**...even deviating a bit from the normal time you take it seems to cause a sort of mini-withdrawal. Good luck.

Med I didn't know any thing about that. Could this be why paxil effected me during the day and at night when I drank beer I felt great. Fondly, Phillipa

They're different drugs in the same class, which means that they'll both inhibit the reuptake of serotonin, but otherwise they are different drugs and will affect people differently.

Just based on my very limited experience -- Paxil for about two years, Zoloft for a couple of months -- Paxil is more sedating than Zoloft, and Zoloft sent me over the moon with anxiety, akathesia, and just plain jitters. It also suppressed my appetite, which was not a good thing for me. (Well, OK, I thought it was a good thing...)

The only way to know if the switch would work is to try it. Although some people have withdrawal problems from Paxil, I stopped a fairly high dose cold turkey, and had no trouble at all from it. I didn't even know that withdrawal was a possible problem until I started reading about it here. It makes sense to take the med at the same time each day, in case your son isn't as fortunate in that regard as I was, but don't let the possibility of withdrawal frighten you off of it.

Good luck.

every med affects everyone differently, which means unfortunately the only way you will know ... is by trying the new med for 3-4 weeks.

i know, i know, we are all guinea pigs. there is a med out there that will help, and you just have to keep trying things until you find the one.

I found the 150mgs dose of Zoloft to be better than the 30mgs/ Paxil dose...but, I did have some moodiness ("mood lability") on zoloft..no full-blown mania, but a little bit of hypomania and lots of breakthrough anxiety. Good luck!

I wish to thank those who responded to my post. I don't know as yet when and if this switch will take place. I was a little troubled by the info that Paxil may be more sedating than Zoloft. I hope it does not have a dulling effect on the personality. Other than that it might work out for us. Regards DJ

Paxil may be more sedating that Zoloft, and Zoloft may be more sedating than Paxil ... you just never know it until you try it. Every med affects everyone differently. These ppl, they share their OWN experiences with a certain drug, but it doesnt mean it all that youo will feel same, and chances are you won't. the chemical breakdown of everyone's body is different. these ppl, they try to help you the best they can with their experiences, but it is unkown how the meds will affect you. unfortunately, you have to try it to know. best of luck and let us know how it goes.

Thanks I'll keep you posted. We can monitor my son and hopefully it won't cause him to lose any control. We might end up waiting till Christmas vacation so he has a few days off school to adjust. He is getting good grades and seems adjusted, he just hates his acne.

All the SSRIs give me acne, including paxil. prozac was the worst though.
