Maxime, a question for you

Posted by Sarah T. on October 10, 2005, at 0:55:22

Hi Maxime,

I'm sorry, I haven't read all of your posts above, but I've read a lot of them. I was just wondering whether you've ever tried selegiline and, if so, did it help you? I gather you might try Prozac again. Because you've been on Parnate, I got to wondering about selegiline. If you haven't tried it yet, do you think it might help you?

Yes, I did try it and it didn't help at all. Nothing. But thanks for trying to think of something that I haven't been on. I really appreciate your concern and care.

Hmmm. . . That's interesting. Both you and I have responded well to stimulants but not so well to MAOIs, although some doctors think of MAOIs as stimulant AD's, and some MAOIs metabolize into amphetamines, although they are not major metabolites (at least they are not major metabolites of selegiline).

Well, if you're going to take Prozac and get off of Parnate, try to look on the bright side. Soon you'll be able to eat pizza again! I remember when I'd been off Parnate for a couple of weeks, I ate pizza every night for a week. I also bought lots of delicious gourmet cheeses.

Okay my ignorance is showing again I didn't know MAOI's metabolized into amphetamines. Is this another reason doctors don't rx them? Fondly, Phillipa

Oddly enough I have a high tolerance for tyramine. I was able to eat any cheese I wanted. Drink red wine. The only food that caused problems was soy sauce. Of course being anorexic my main food groups are yogourt and apples.

You are not ignorant Phillipa. It's Parnate that people say metabolize into amphetamines but I am not even sure that it true.

Ed, do you know?

Hi there, Maxime and Phillipa,

Years ago, I heard that Parnate metabolized into amphetamines but I don't think it does. Frankly, I've never found out what its metabolites are. Selegiline has several metabolites, including the levo- isomers of amphetamine and methamphetamine, but I believe they are not major metabolites. Remember that the levorotatory isomers of amphetamines are the ones that tend to cause more peripheral adverse effects such as tremors, palpitations, anxiety, etc.
