Neurotin and Anxiety

Exactly how is neurotin supposed to help with severe anxiety? I thought this was just a mood stablilizer? Thanks, Fondly, Phillipa

My understanding is that it works on GABA. It has become quite popular b/c of its low side effect and drug interaction profile. I've taken it for a few yrs and found it pretty helpful. It helps me with rumination, although my pdoc said that she usually hears that people find it more helpful w/ physical anxiety issues. Are you looking to try it?

Best,
EE

Emily Elizabeth, My pdoc mentioned it yesterday. She knows my primary diagnosis is severe anxiety that leads to depression and a feeling of not being able to move. Frozen. But since I've had such horrible sides effects with meds and she says I'm very sensitive to them. She thought I'd better just stick with luvox and valium for now. She admits that my tolerance to valium has gone up but it's physical and I don't abuse them or get a buzz. But last night my anxiety was so high I didn't even sleep as my husband was up all night. So I ended up taking 30mg unstead of l5mg and still could not sleep. We are moving and it's not any easy move. We have a condo, house , investment lot. And we gave away most of our furniture before we moved to the beach. And now my daughter who lives where we're moving decided to get a divorce. And I know how much stress is involved. So many thoughts as you say ruminations are going round and round so I can't concentrate, read, eat, or do anything but sit and worry. Fondly, Phillipa

Phillipa,

I feel for you. The rumination thing is horrible. You get so wound up that sleep is impossible. Does the Valium still help with anxiety in the daytime? Maybe going back on the Luvox will help with the rumination. My pdoc said that since it's useful for OCD it might help with obsessive thoughts.

What I used to do at night when I could sleep because I couldn't stop thinking was, well 2 things. I would sometimes get up and write down a list of all the things I was worried about and tell myself I would deal with it tomorrow. Just writing it down helped. Also I would envision all the things I was worried about and mentally put them in a box and visualize setting that box down on the floor out in the hall outside my bedroom. I knew they were still there but they were out of my bedroom and I could get to sleep better.

Hope this helps a little.

Marsha

Lyrica is the "new" Neurotin. The patten just expired on Neurotin so they came with a new/improved/better version. I was just at my doctors today (who is a leading researcher on anxiety meds)and we discussed both meds. He told me that Lyrica was much better as it delivers the medicine at a much smaller dose therefore fewer side affects. It acts as a mood stabalizer (which helps with those of us who tend to be on the depressed side) as well as on anxiety. He said it was great for GAD and tests show that it works on SAD as well. He said it works on GABA in a way that is different from benzos. I've been on it for a short time and so far it's working better than klonopin. All that being said if you think Neurotin may be good for you, Lyrica, the same medication only cleaner and more potent would seem to be a better choice.

Have you ever tried Neurontin? If so, how does pregabalin compare to it? Neurontin was definitely anxiolytic for me and helped relax my muscles (a bonus), but poop-out occurred and higher doses caused too many cognitive effects. Some Babble posters said they also had side effects with pregabalin similar to Neurontin and some experienced poop-out on it. What dose are you on and what other meds is it augmenting, if you don't mind my asking? Thanks for any input.

Cairo:

I'm am currently at 200mgs of Lyrica. I started at 50mgs. I'm am taking it in hopes that it will replace the klonopin I've been on for 11 years. When I started Lyrica I was taking 2mgs of klonopin which helped about 70% with the anxiety, but seem to keep me flat, a little depressed. As nothing else as ever worked for me my doctor thought Lyrica could replace the klonopin completely for anxiety while giving me some anti depressant affects. So now I'm at my half way mark. Half off klonopin and half way up on Lyrica. Every three days I go up 50 on the Lyrica and down .25 on the klonopin. I don't think I'll know the answer to Lyrica until I'm all the way off of klonopin and all the way up on Lyrica. It does concern me when I read that Lyrica seems to poop out on others. If nothing else it allowed me to get off klonopin something that I have found almost impossible to do without other meds in the past. So if Lyrica fails, I will get off it (which I'm told is much easier to do than with a benzo like klonopin). If that happens I'm holding out for EMSAM which I believe will be available within 6 months (the MAOI patch that should eliminate food problems along with other bad side affects). Right now I'm a day at a time. I've had a few good days and some I've just tolerated. I feel a bit "drugged" at times, but my doctor says that will improve when I'm off the klonopin as they potentiate each other. Lastly, I never really gave Neurotin much of a chance, though I tried it briefly. So it's a day at a time for me. I hope it works as I really didn't like the way I felt overall with klonopin.
