What is the verdict on Dexedrine tums

Posted by Maxime on October 1, 2005, at 7:54:36

Hi.

I remember reading that baking soda can increase the effectiveness of dexedrine. Does it make it last longer or just give it more "bang"? Then I remember reading that some people used Tums to increase the effectiveness. Does this work?

I think the idea is if you can acidify your urine (with ammonium chloride?) amphetamine will be metabolized more quickly, and if you make your urine alkaline (sodium bicarbonate) amphetamine will be metabolized more slowly.

I'd wondered if it might be best to speed up the metabolism of amphetamine since the good part was so short lived.

Are Tums antacids?

Hi Maxime,

I've never combined Dexedrine with either baking soda or Tums, but I think a PB poster named "Ame Sans Vie" might have tried one or both of those. Perhaps you can check the archives for his experiences with them. I'm pretty sure that some antiacid has been used to "augment" Dexedrine, but I don't know whether it was Tums or one of the other ones, and I don't know which ingredient in antiacids is the important one as far as enhancing Dexedrine's effects. I'm pretty sure that different antiacids have different ingredients. For example, Tums probably have different ingredients than Rolaids, so it's important to find out exactly which ingredient is the critical one.

I should probably start another thread for the next thing I want to mention, but I'll say it here . . . I get the impression that you're still on Parnate (somehow I had missed that information until now). I was on Parnate a long time ago, and although it was more activating than most other AD's I'd been on up to that point, it also LOWERED my blood pressure a lot, so I often had NO energy whatsoever. A few photographs were taken of me during that time, and whenever I see them, I can't believe how "wiped out" and exhausted I look. Later, a small amount of Ritalin was added to the Parnate, and that combination brought my blood pressure up to about normal (110/70 or 120/70). Raising my blood pressure helped relieve some of that fatigue. I just wanted to mention that in case it might help. Have you had your blood pressure checked now and then? Do you have a BP monitor? Prior to taking Parnate, I never thought that I'd complain about my BP being too low, but it really was so low, I could barely move.

S.

Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda/alka seltzer) is supposed to have a slight augmentation effect with amphetamines. I've tried it before and didn't notice much of a diffference.

Tums would have no effect.

My BP naturally runs low and yes, the Parnate does make it go lower at times. I always have to stand up slowly. I also have barely any reflexes when the doctor tests me. I'm using the dexedrine for exhaustion but also for a false sense of well being ... in other words for my depression.

Thanks for your input. :-)

Not sure lowing stomach PH is a good idea

Hey Maxine

When I was taking Dexedrine I did experiment with Bicarbonate of Soda, and some other anti-acids.
They deffinetly potentiated Dexedrine, however they changed the nature of the boost I got from Dex. After takining anti acids, I found that I experienced more anxiety than I usually got with Dex.

The other problem with taking antiacids is that lowing stomach PH isn't always a good idea.
I suffering from low stomach acid (I think) although I never had it tested.
Low stomach acid is annoying, and has been linked to depression, apparently is hard for the body to absorb certain nutrients such as B12 and Iron.

Sorry to be negative, perhapse these consideration will not be relivant to you

Tom, taking Tums or bicarbonate of soda or Rolaids should RAISE stomach pH, to make it LESS acidic (i.e., more basic). As acidity increases, the pH is lowered. As acidity decreases, or as it becomes more basic, the pH is raised.

D'OH! Sorry I meant raising pH!

Hey Maxime

Sorry your having such a crap time
I suffer from low stomach acid, which makes me feel bloated and gives me slow digestion.

If your suffering from high stomach acid then Anti Acids probably won't do any harm.

You could also try Calcium and Magesium supplements, high stomach acid is supposed to deplete them in the body.

I feel a bit crap myself, damn Marplan isn't doing much.

Did you get my email about your doctor?
Just wondering

Take care anyway

No, I didn't get your email yet. I don't know, YAHOO doesn't seem to be delivering me all my messages lately.
