Need critical help...Zyprexa and high blood sugar

Posted by jay on August 16, 2005, at 16:39:09

I don't know if anyone else has experienced the raising of blood sugar levels while on Zyprexa...but I have considerably. When this happens, I feel moody, irritable, etc. Is there anyway I can get the Zyprexa out of my system faster? I only took two doses and my blood sugar in the 11-12 range on the glucomter. 5 or so is considered "normal". Can someone please give me some advice? Thanks very much...

Jay

I honestly cant think of anyway to get Zyprexa out of your system faster...avoid caffeine (raises the blood-level of antipsychotics...also, some other medications (notably the SSRIs, tricyclics) will also raise the blood levels of many antipsychotics when they are co-administered. Some medications (trileptal, tegretol, I think phenobarbital) will lower the level of zyprexa and just about anything else in your system because of their effects on liver enzymes. Cigarette smoking reduces the level of most antipsychotics (I think all of them except for abilify) in your system, and will also reduce blood levels of tricyclics. If you've decided to stop taking zyprexa, then you might just want to call a doc and get the high blood sugar itself taken care of while you wait for the zyprexa to clear of your system. You may need to continue treatment for the high blood-sugar for a little while, because in some cases people continue to have problems for a while after the zyprexa has been completely withdrawn and a "washout" has been completed (in very rare cases, Zyprexa has contributed to Type II diabetes that remained a problem even *after* the drug the had been withdrawn for a while--but, these were people taking it long-term, so this doesn't really apply to you). I'm sorry about the side-effects you've experienced...fortunately, they will go away a while after the zyprexa is withdrawn. Good luck, and please keep us all posted.

The overall effect is what to be concerned about. After taking Zyprexa for 1 year (20 mg per day), my son went from 135 to 205 lbs. His pdoc ordered blood tests a blood pressure evaluation. His blood sugar was elevated and his BP was high. We were able to get him cut back to 15 mg per day after a month of partial doses. We cut him back on fast food because of high sodium content. We made him cut back on sweets like ice cream and cookies because Zyprexa seems to cause sweet cravings and got him on a mild excercise regimen. His blood pressure dropped to normal levels and so did his blood sugar.

Hi J!

Are you going to switch to a different antipsychotic. I know you like perphenazine!

Have you ever tried Abilify?

Check this webpage out. Read the article on the zyprexa wafers(Zydis) and the Metformin part. None of these ideas are proven but that doesn't mean they don't work and might be worth a try.
