Cymbalta for social anxiety?

Posted by Rocket Jackson on August 8, 2005, at 16:10:16

Has anyone tried Cymbalta for social anxiety disorder? I was recently started on it for my generalized anxiety, but I wonder if it will help with either my generalized anxiety or social anxiety. I also take Klonopin and Provigil prn for anticipated social events, but have been looking for a baseline anxiolytic med. I had initially suggested Zoloft but was instead advised to try Cymbalta. Any thoughts or experiences? Thanks!

Well, I started out on Effexor for bipolar2 depression and GAD and when that pooped out after a year, the next choice was Cymbalta as it's also an SNRI. Its effect for me was more subtle and longer in its onset, but the side effects were almost insignificant. I'd say it's helped a lot. I take 60 mg at night.
I also take xanax .5 mg as required for panic and anxiety (less so now than ever before) and Topamax as a mood stabiliser.
Good luck,

So glad you're not PC anymore. You must have hit the jackpot with your meds! Fondly, Phillipa

I was on Cymbalta for about 6 months. I thought that it was a very good medication with not much in the way of side effects. I think that it is less likely than Zoloft to cause sexual side effects.

I stopped taking Cymbalta because I think that it occasionally caused me to lose my temper. But that also happened to me when I took Strattera. Both drugs affect norepinephrine and I guess I'm too sensitive to that particular effect. But I think that most people do not have the temper side effect from those 2 drugs.

I think that taking Cymbalta every day, and then taking the other 2 drugs prn is a strategy to try.

My current drugs are working very well for my anxiety and ADD. I take Provigil (but every day, not prn) 400 mg ; and Lexapro 15 mg. I found that when I increased the Provigil from 200 mg to 400 mg that it decreased my anxiety level.

Provigil costs $1,200 for a 3 months supply of 400 mg per day. (It actually would cost more than that, but that is the insurance company negotiated price). So $1,200 is the discounted price of 180 pills where each pill is 200 mg. That comes to $7 per pill! Fortunately, my plan has a mail order option where I only have to pay $35 for a 3 months supply.
