Topomax/Mood/Weight

Posted by CareBear04 on July 30, 2005, at 7:31:15

Hi Everyone,
I think I'm at the end of the line with mood stabilizers. Lithium has worked best for me, but I get toxic a lot. I've also been on Neurontin, Lamictal, Trileptal, and Depakote, plus all the atypical antipsychotics, plus Haldol and Trilafon. I'm currently on Topamax and Abilify. I'd been on Abilify before, but only for about two weeks. Do you think Topamax is a strong enough mood stabilizer to contend with some pretty strong manic depression and bad sleep problems? I have the type of Bipolar that repsonds best to lithium-- not rapid cycling but long and pretty bad cycles. I had my first episode as a teenager and am now 23.
Also, I've for some reason gained a ridiculous amount of weight recently-- like 10 pounds in a month. DO you think TOpomax plus Adderall/Dexedrine, which I'm also on (and was off during that time) will help take it off? I'm moved pretty quickly up to 200mg of Topamax. I've also been taken off my PRozac, which I thought was helpig me. Thanks everyone. CB

Topomax is known to help aide in weight loss for some people. The Prozac could have been the culprit in the weight gain so maybe now that you're off of it, you'll lose some pounds.

I don't how efficient Topomax is for mania, I've only known one person who used it and it was for seizures.

Good luck!

I take a low dose of Topamax (25mg/day) as a mood stabiliser in conjunction with Cymbalta for mild Bipolar II. It's been a real help for me - evened me out so that the lows and highs are much more manageable.
I'm mostly depressive with short and agitated manic periods lasting a week or less.
I have also found that my appetite has been supressed to what I'd consider "normal" and no longer feel the bottomless hunger that antidepressants induce in me. I am v-e-r-y slowly losing some weight, and more importantly, feel well enough to resume regular exercise.
Good luck,
partlycloudy
