WHAT IS CLOZAPINE USED FOR?

Posted by pretty_paints on July 23, 2005, at 10:28:57

Hello peeps

I am at home, have taken an hour out from hospital. The hospital is complete hell, it is horrible. People there are very very ill and loud and crazy. I am sharing a room with a witch. She gave me a pair of earrings and is now controlling me through them. This way she gets to control people. Everyone shouts and chucks stuff around and screams, it's horrible.

I met my new doctor on Friday. He was ok, although I am desperately wanting my old doctors back :( My old doctor turned up at the hospital but refused to see me on "ethical grounds". I was sobbing for ages about it. The new doc says we will start clozapine this week (well, not we, ME, I mean he isn't going to start it is he!). He hasn't given me any diagnosis, I don't think I have schizophrenia. What other diagnoses are there for taking clozapine?

Anyway just thought I'd say hi. Love to Ed!!! Hope your revision is going ok! I feel like I'm in prison in that place, it's yuk.

Lots of love, Kate xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Hi Katie,

Hospital sounds yuck. Hospital is very boring LOL! I remember a man who thought he was possessed by demons.

>The new doc says we will start clozapine this week.....

I hope it helps :-) It probably will. You'll probably start at 12.5mg once or twice daily on the first day. There are three brand names now, you might not get Clozaril. You might get Denzapine or Zaponex.

>What other diagnoses are there for taking clozapine?

Clozapine is most commonly used to treat schizophrenia, which (I believe) is why you'll be taking it. Clozapine is also used to treat schizoaffective disorder.

>Hope your revision is going ok!

It's not!

Hi Katie,

Good luck with clozapine, I think it will help :-)

I don't think you'll be in hospital for long. Your doctor will want you in hospital to start clozapine. You'll probably have frequent blood pressure monitoring after taking your first dose. He'll probably let you go home soon.

You'll have a blood test before you start clozapine. This will measure the concentration of white blood cells in your blood. After starting clozapine, you'll need to have a blood test once weekly at first. The hospital pharmacy will only dispense your medication after receiving your blood test results. Your first blood tests will be performed while you're in hospital. After a short while, you'll continue to receive blood tests as an outpatient.

You'll be out soon :-) I'm thinking of you......and your COOL orange hair!!!! I love it, thank you for sending the pic! :-) Just so everyone knows, pretty_paints really is pretty!

>The new doc says we will start clozapine this week (well, not we, ME, I mean he isn't going to start it is he!).

LOL, you've got a great sense of humour :-P You make me smile.

>He hasn't given me any diagnosis, I don't think I have schizophrenia.

I believe that you're *probably* suffering from a type of schizophrenia called 'paranoid schizophrenia'. Ask your new doctor for more information.

Love you!

Good lucky pretty. My doctor is considering clozapine a little down the road if things don't work out with my current medicines. I've heard good things about it when all other antipsychotics fail. I have a diagnosis of schizophrenia (residual type) similar to simple schizophrenia or simple deteriorative disorder which was taken out of the DSM for some reason I think.

Good luck again, and keep us updated. I will be very interested in what you have to say about it.

It looks as though Tom has BabbleMail turned on, so she can write to him through that. If the name on the post is a link, then BabbleMail is on...

Hi Everyone!

I have just escaped the silly hospital for a while to dry my clothes. A girl jumped off a car park and died so they had a memorial service and we all got wet in the rain.

Today was a little better. I saw the doc, he said I can go home when we reach 300mg (if all is ok), which is in 2 or 3 weeks. I went on a walk today at 9:30 and then later my care coordinator came to visit.

Things are still pretty crazy and people are very odd but im getting used to it. I'm knitting teddy bears for people at the moment. They look at me as if I'm some unbelievably talented knitter, but they're only a couple of crappy bears! My nan knits them about five times as fast as me!

Anyway I will go on back now. Thanks so much for replying!! I was so glad to see all the replies :)

Keep on going with your revision Ed, I know it sucks.

lots of hugs everyone xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Hi Katie,

I'm curious about which hospital you're in. Do mail me and tell!

What dose of clozapine are you on at the moment? How are you finding it?

>A girl jumped off a car park and died...

That's awful. Did you know her from the ward?

>he said I can go home when we reach 300mg (if all is ok), which is in 2 or 3 weeks........

:-) What a relief!

Hey Edward

I am again home (hurrah). I haven't started on Clozapine yet, I am cutting down on Abilify.

I'm in Barrow Hospital, Bristol.

No I didn't know the girl. She died the night I arrived and everyone's been on and on about it ever since. It's hard coz I never knew her so I'm not that bothered (sounds awful I know).

Anyway, went to Art Therapy today and actually enjoyed it. Then slept a lot, had a meeting with my sort of stand-in doctor (not my consultant). For some reason there were two doctors there, I'm curious why. I asked and they said "ah two doctors is better than one!". But I don't really get it.

Anyway, speak to you again soon. By the way, TomG sent me his pic and he is very good-looking. Just so you all know, lol.

Byeee !!! xxxx

ps: Sorry to embarrass (sp?) you TomG.

Hi Katie!!!

>I'm in Barrow Hospital, Bristol.

Is it a psych hosp or a general hosp with a psych ward? I was in a hospital which was exclusively psych + geriatric.

>Anyway, went to Art Therapy today and actually enjoyed it.

:-) You can draw pics of me and TomG LOL! j/k

>For some reason there were two doctors there, I'm curious why.

One of them was probably in training.

LOTS of love
