Can someone explain this statement ??

Posted by linkadge on June 11, 2005, at 3:47:40

I read this statement on "crazy meds run down" site.

"And the MAOIs have their own discontinuation syndrome. But they really do work for some people when everything else fails, especially if Remeron worked for you before then pooped out........"

How does remeron's actions fit with those of and MAOI ???

That crazymeds website seems to have a lot of misinformation... Jon

I'm not so sure though about this statement. Since, strange enough, I have heard this many times before in many different places.

So how does remeron compare to MAOI's? Fondly, Phillipa

Thats what I am wondering! I read in a few places that if remeron works for you really well, and then stops, then you stand to have a good responce to an MAOI.

Isn't remeron an AD? So, I guess he's saying that if it poops out on you, the MAOIs might work as well as remeron did for you. Don't know about either, but love the crazymeds site.

Link, it may be "Reagan-esque" statement: Take a statement. Repeat over and over. Voila! It becomes true.

I mean how likely is it that someone gathered a bunch of people on who had Remeron poop-out and a bunch of people who had zoloft poop-out (or whatever) and then put them on an MAOI and discovered Remeron poop-out was an indicator or success on MAOI's. Plus, I've been on the two MAOI's and their effects were completely different. They may be in the same category but they are two different drugs. I doubt if Remeron poop-out would indicate something about success on one of them, no saying both.

Plus, I have a problem with this statement: "And the MAOIs have their own discontinuation syndrome." Huh? Is that true either? Who knows!

"And the MAOIs have their own discontinuation syndrome."

Sure they do. I found parnate withdrawl totally different than SSRI withdrawl or effexor withdrawl.

You could be right, but who knows, maybe a bunch of remeron remissions followed by poop outs only responded to MAOI's.

I just would like to know their reasoning thats all, if there is any.

dopamine, maybe?

doesn't blockade of the 5-HT2 receptors improve dopamine function. that would make it one of the few modern antidepressants that actually affect dopamine at all, thus making dopaminergic drugs (like MAOIs) good substitutes?

Yes, that is true. I believe that alpha-2 angatonism actually increases dopamine/norepinephrine release too.
