Am I truely BP2?

Posted by woolav on June 11, 2005, at 8:15:01

I am asking this because I thought if you were bp2 that taking an AD didnt really matter as long as you were taking mood stabelizers. I am taking 900 mg of MS per day, but when i tried stopping prozac, i started feeling depressed again and had to restart it. Do others with BP2 take an AD with their med regiment?

Most people with BP II spend most of the time is a state of depression and probably need antidepressants to treat it. The folks up at Harvard don't believe in using antidepressants for bipolar disorder, especially without mood stabilizers. Other research teams are much more likely to prescribe antidepressants. If you are bipolar, I think it is important to find a mood stabilizer that actually does something. If your MS is Neurontin, I doubt it is well suited to prevent mania or act as an antidepressant. I am impressed with Trileptal. The right mood stabilizers (more than one might be necessary) can act in concert with an antidepressant to bring the depression into remission while acting as a prophylactic against mania. This the goal.

I know what you are saying. I was diagnosed with bipolar once, and told to get off the celexa and onto lithium.

Even at 1200mg of lithium I would still go into rage attacks (I tend not to get sad, just mad).

Anyhow, the rage attacks and the hoplesseness continued daily until somebody took me off lithium and back on celexa.

In like a day or two the rage completely subsided.

I think there is a lot of suffering that continues to this day becuase some doctors keep trying to ram you into these categories.
