Weight gain on _low-dose_ Zyprexa?

Posted by cache-monkey on May 31, 2005, at 17:07:58

Hey all,

I'm thinking about trying low-dose Zyprexa for a cluster of symptoms that it might benefit. I know weight gain can be a huge issue with this drug. I feel like I could probably handle maybe 10 pounds (I'm 175), but not much more than that. I'm also willing to work out more to compensate for an appetite or metabolism effect.

What I'd like to know if anyone has had success with Zyprexa in the range of 2.5-5 mg/day and *not* gained a tremendous amount of weight. If so, was this because you took countermeasures, or were appetite and metabolism issues not present for you?

(It would also be helpful if you could mention your reason for going on the drug...)

Thanks in advance,
cache-monkey

Hi I was put on 2.5 mg of Zyprexa while in the hospital. They wanted me to gain weight. It was awful. I was out of control. I stopped taking it as soon I as left the hospital. Sometimes I would hide it my mouth and not swallow it. So you can gain weight at 2.5 mg. In over a week I gain over 12 pounds. I don't think all of it was from eating either because I was in the hospital where is the food is disgusting.

Thanks for the input, Maxime. Sorry to hear about your experience with it. This must have been quite frustrating. BTW, I'm assuming this was an appetite effect, or was this metabolic?

Thanks,

It was appetite effect. I was in the hospital because my weight had dropped to 70 pounds from anorexia. I think that what they did was very damaging to me, both mentally and physically. To gain 12 pounds flipped me out. And physically if you re-feed someone with anorexia too quickly they can have a heart attack. I wrote a letter to the hospital afterwards, but nothing was ever done.

It was hell.

Well, I'm on Symbyax 6/50 (so that's 6mg Zyprexa and 50mg Prozac) for treatment-resistant depression. I've gained about 3 pounds in 3 weeks. I've added Axid to my pill regimen to see if it helps.

I take 10 mg so I really can't speak for low doses. That aside, I've gained over 50 pounds in 5 months.

I've never taken Zyprexa for more than a week because it made me ragingly hungry. That's at 2.5 mg. It worked great for anxiety, though.

Does the weight gain go away if you stop taking Zyprexa? I took 2.5 mg for about three days, with one 10 mg dose in there as well, and then quit. But two and a half weeks later I still feel a little heavier despite running more at the gym and continuing with my weight-lifting regimen. Is my metabolism screwed now? This is soooo frustrating. I want to scream! Also, what about hair loss? Does the Zyprexa cause that? Will that reverse as well, or will things be a downward spiral -- both weight- and hair-wise -- from here on out?
