long half-life benzos for bipolar disorder?

Posted by sdb on May 20, 2005, at 5:00:56

Hi everybody sorry to interupt you again!

Does somebody use long-half life benzodiazepines for bipolar disorder in agreement with your pdoc?

Does somebody prefer this treatment in spite of all the availabe "mood stabilizers"?

With warm regards
and thank you for sharing your worthy experiences.

(I do not have so much time so please dont be angry I am asking four questions at once!)

Hi.Luckily I am up early today. :-)

I was DX'd bipolar and used the Klonopin as a mood stabilser since it was the only one that worked and that I could tolerate. Now I have Trileptal. That is why I am on 4 mg of Klonopin which is high. But yes, I like it and and it does help. But now with more mood stabilisers available I would probably try one of them first or combine with a small amount of a benzo. The only reason is because the benzo is hard to get off if you decide to do it. But Klonopin is used the most for bipolar out of all the benzos.

Long half-life benzos for bp disorder- why not?

I have bp with anxious and OCD syndromes in bad phases.

When I went to my pdoc I first took many SSRIS (caused panic attacks, OCD thoughts -> only negative). I think that was the time SSRIS were used for everything (pdoc explained the wonderful theory of more serotonin in synaptic cleft, that was in my highschool years). Then I prescribed myself "mood-stabilizers" like Lamictal alone(caused some minor mania->useless),
then I took Zyprexa (sleeping nonstop 3 days, bad mood). I do not have any positive experience with these stabilizers. Only with low benzo, something metabolized to nordiazepam I had success. Clonazepam also helped a lot but it caused some lethargie and total sexual disfunction (too bad).

Why not taking a long-acting benzo for bp?-I dont see any reason against it.

Some comments to my experiences and questions are welcome!
