Vistaril anyone?

Posted by JLynn on May 9, 2005, at 19:55:22

I was recently prescribed Vistaril for anxiety. I've taken it twice, both times in the evening. The next day I can hardly stay awake. Could this be do to the med??? or something else??? I can't work like this---falling asleep at work. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I know they commonly mix it with demerol for IM in hospitals, supposed to make the demerol last longer.

It's the med...it's an antihistamine, like Benadryl. They're known for their sedative properties and are often prescribed as sleep aids in addition to allergy medications.

But should it last this long? I know when it's given IM with demerol, most people require another IM 4hrs. later. Never heard anyone complain of the tiredness. But then again, maybe the pain kept them awake. Fondly, Phillipa

I guess it depends on the half-life of the Vistaril...that and whether or not Demerol, for instance, is metabolized by the same pathway. I'm suprised you've never heard of Demerol making people tired...I've never had to use it, but it IS an opiate. It may have woken them up when it started to wear off, and like you said they could feel the pain again. Codeine put me to sleep...probably the mildest narcotic pain-killer.

I think what I meant was if they took a shot of Demerol and Vistaril and it wasn't on a continuous basis they wouldn't be tired the next day. But of course right after surgery they did sleep. Most went on oral pain meds before discharge. Fondly, Phillipa

I have not taken this myself, but I used to have a client who took it. He also felt quite sedated by it.

Also, my dog takes it for allergies. The vet assured me that dogs do not react with sleepiness the way that humans do. And I've not noticed that, but at times it might be nice! :)

Have you had luck with other anti-anxiety meds?
