Geodon side effects?

Posted by tampagirl70 on May 3, 2005, at 7:55:15

My pdoc just switched me to geodon from risperdal for my ocd. Its in addition to the celexa and wellbutrin I'm taking. I stopped taking the risperdal because of the constipation and dry mouth that came with it and now I'm depressed. What side effects has anyone experienced with geodon? I'm starting at 20mg - is that low? What's a regular dose? Thanks.

I didn't know it was good for OCD. I thought luvox and anafranil were the drugs of choice? Fondly, Phillipa

They use atypicals for OCD when the SRI's fail to achieve a good result. For me personally they have helped somewhat but not as much as an SRI

TampaGirl,

I started on 20 mg of Geodon which is the lowest dose available and since it comes in a capsule form cannot be split. The first several doses I took the capsule apart and only took half of the contents for perhaps 5 or so days, then I took one capsule a day only. The initial side effects were a feeling of being energized, but not overly so.

I was told by some people on this site that Geodon is supposed to be given twice a day since the half life of it is about 7 hours so after 6-8 hours (if it's working for you) you almost feel tired and feel like the benefits are wearing off. My doc said at low doses it can have some hypomaniac effects to it. The usual dose for some one with schizophrenia or psychosis would be as high as 80 mg, 40 mg 2x/day. This drug can run as high as $300/month I think for 60 pills of 20 mg.

After a month or so I don't notice any real obvious side effects but I'm not sure what it's doing either. So what else is new. For $300 I want some definate improvements.

My pdoc put me on it for some residual paranoid and hypersensitiviy feelings I have always had with my depression. I am also on Wellbutrin and Celexa.

Numerous times it has taken me three or four tries to make up my mind about a med. I've only tried it twice. At some point, I may go for a third.

Geodon is one of the oddest meds. I've tried it twice. One time it made me energized thoughtful and reduced my need for sleep to a point that bordered on insomnia. The second time I tried it geodon made me sleepy and depressed. I assume I was on different meds each time I added it to my drug regimen. I can't really explain my completely different reactions.

I think my main prob each time was back pain/cramps. I think the technical term is dystonia. I quit each due to that.

Peace, River.

Be careful...I took this for maj dep, or possibly Bipolar 2, cant remember the dose, but...over 6 mos. I became VERY anxious (first time in my life: I don't have anxiety component to my depression). I also could not follow directions to go anywhere- became totally disoriented. And, finally, became anorexic. At first I loved this part- I am overweight, and ended up losing 50 lbs in less than 6mos, but the day I quit it I couldnt force myself to eat a cup of soup- the 1st food in 24 hours. My hair was falling out by the handsfull I was so malnourished at that point.

Basically, in 35 yrs of meds for depression the worst!!! Oh, and it didnt help either!

Sorry/// just want you to be careful and not "stick it out" as long as I did.
