Question about hypomania ***

Posted by woolav on April 27, 2005, at 12:50:18

Hi, My pdoc has been treating me with meds designed typically for BP disorder. But she has never told me that. But when I saw a Therapist, he said based on the meds and what i was telling him that I prob have a mild form of bp. I am trying to find out if this could be considered a "hypomania" episode: (back round first, I have always been very insecure about myself and need alot of attn or praise to feel good about myself) So, out of the blue I start chatting online with men, sent pics and waited for their responses. Everyone told me i was hot and attractive etc..So, i got into this roller coaster thing where i just couldnt get enough of the guys telling me that. Well, in order to keep their interest, I would flirt back, acting as if i would have an affair. This way, I knew they would keep talking to me. It got way out of control. I even met someone for a drink once. This behavior is uncharactristic of me. I am not a sexual person really (prob bc of meds) so I wasnt interested in having an affair, just wanting the sexual attention. Anyway, my husband found out and doesnt believe that this could be caused by my illness. Could this be considered a hypomania episode or pychotic episode?? has anyone ever heard of this?
Thanks
S

This is not a psychotic episode. A psychotic episode includes a real break from reality - ie I am the queen or I hear voices in my head or I think my car is going into labor with siamese twins. In and of itself, this does not sound like a hypomanic episode. Hypomania includes multiple symptoms, which admittedly can include risky and/or highly sexual behaior. It is tough to say, but I would guess that this is at least partly psychological rather than fully chemical. It is good that you are honest with your husband. Keep looking for the root of this behavior; be honest with your therapist. You are not a horrible person.

Hi,

Increased self-esteem and hypersexuality can definatly be part of hypomanic episodes. If you like, there's a good book to check out called "Surviving Manic Depression" by E. Fuller Torrey. and Michael Knable. To quote them a little "Increased self-esteem is the third major manifestiation of mania. In the hypomanic state, according to Custance, "the normal inhibitions disappear." and "Increased sexual activity is also common. As Jamison observed, "sensuality is pervasive and the desire to seduce and be seduced irresistible."

But there is more to a hypomanic episode. Dr. Ivan's Depression Central is a good place to look on the web. If you think you are getting hypomanic, talk to your pdoc ASAP! It could spiral down into depression or up into true mania. Only your pdoc can tell what's really going on.

What meds are you taking?

Good luck!

I personally think this is very dangerous behavior. Especially meeting someone you met over the net for a drink. I am not bipolar, that I know of[but who knows they keep adding more categories], but it sounds hypomanic to me. Are you spending more money than you normally would? Fondly, Phillipa

If that is what it is and you are taking your meds forgive yourself. Can your husband do the same? Fondly, Phillipa
