i swear when i take klonopin it actually energizes me, lifts my mood, make me more outgoing, eases depression..sh!t, in general just makes life a hell of alot nicer. i thought this stuff was just for anxiety..though some people claim mood stabilizing effects. damned if i know.

Well it is stabilising your mood ... a good mood. :-)

And it's not a claim. It is a mood stabiliser. It's anti-convulsant.

I can back up maxime's statement. Clonazepam is the most prescribed benzo -- especially in bipolar/schizophrenic patients. Klonopin has very anxiolytic as well as mood stabilizing properties, some thing not commonly found in the benzo family. Of all the benzos available it is my professional opinion that it is the best under most circumstances. Your 'reaction' is likely just a return to "normal" GABA levels as well as life in general, so congrats!

Aside -- it may also be a paradoxical reaction causing hypomanic reactions to the drug, consult your doctor if you feel that this may be the case.

Regards,

Matt

I wish it had effected me this way. I just felt dull. Do you think that if klonopin works for you it's an indication that you have a mood disorder? And that if it doesn't work for you you have one of the anxiety disorders by itself? Fondly, Phillipa

Thank Matt :-) I really felt like no one has been listening.

And I also agree about "feeling too good". Tendency if you think it's causing hypomania, you should check with your doctor (although I know you are loving it right now).

No because for some people it helps their anxiety, especially social anxiety. It's the gaba!

Phillipa,

I never meant to suggest that klonopin, or any pharmaceutical product, can act as a diagnostic tool. Your different response could be due to any number of causes.

Klonopin is the most commonly, if not the only, benzo used in bipolar/schizophrenic patients as it is know to have strongest of the mood stabilizing properties.

The dulling could be considered depression, which is not uncommon with Klonopin. I would recommend trying another, and be sure to keep your doses "Pro Re Nata," as needed - this advice from personal experience, benzos are not a class of drugs you want to become dependent upon.

Best of luck Phillipa, sorry for the confusion!

Regards,

Matt

Matt, Thanks for answering me, I was hoping you would. You really have cleared up a lot for me. I now know why klonopin had such a dulling effect on me. I have been on a benzo since my 20's and never abused or went up on the rx'd dose. As they came into popularity it was first valium, ativan, xanax, and then klonopin which made me dull. I recently started seeing an older pdoc. Her name is Judith S. Yongue. You can search her name and you will see the numerous psychiatriac boards she reviews for and articles she has written. She once again put me on valium. I take a total of l5mg a day divided. She believes in the older drugs and the fact that they've been around so long. My mind has been changed by my 30 some odd years of benzo use, and I'm just grateful that I never abused them and valium still works. In the past as my anxiety abated I was able to cut down on the valium even while attending RN school, running a business, and going through a divorce with 3 children at home. I'm hoping that now I will again be able to get back to nursing [as I love it] and work at least part-time. I worked all aspects from ICU ,ER, Med-Surg, Telemetry, CCU Peds, etc. and then went to my love psych. My thyroid went and I went through menopause, chronic lymes disease, and a lot of life changes. I think and hope new Docs will listen to their pts and work together with them to decide on a medication regime, and not just go with what is popular. You sound like that kind of person and I know you will be empathetic as you have "walked in the shoes". Look forward to hearing from you. Fondly, Phillipa
