Increase which medication? (or change?)

Posted by jay on April 11, 2005, at 23:34:38

Oh man, I am back to nasty insomnia. Here is my 'cocktail':

80mg's Prozac
50 mg's Nortriptyline
1mg of Risperdal
1 mg of clonazepam 4x daily
50 mg of topomax (which keeps me feeling steady through the day...I've tried the before/after thing)
I also have 10 mg of Ritalin to take 2 x daily if needed...I wonder if that will make me crave sleep more at night.

There are 5 meds there...I don't know about my doctor adding or increasing any meds...as things are pretty high already. But, it seems I tolerate high doses of meds...I just don't think he wants to be responible if anything happens. ****Plus****, how many doc's let you make up a formula like that?

I'd go the Zyprexa way, but it causes high blood sugar readings in me (I have my Dad's old, last year machine...and all the proper equipment.) I have been tested for diabetes...and no I don't have it...and don't WANT to have it thanks to Zyprexa. The 1mg of Risperdone is *nothing*. I feel I should be on 4-5mg's.

Well...thanks for listening...comments always appreciated...

Jay

What is your DX?

Well, I hope you are taking the Prozac in the morning and the Nortrip at night. If you increased the Risperdal then maybe you wouldn't need the Topomax. I found Topomax to be quite activating ... especially since I went into a state of psychosis.

What is the Ritalin for? If needed for what?

Maxime

That's a good question. Ritalin as needed? Fondly, Phillipa

Well..I don't consider Dx to have much weight....I just believe in unconventional treatments (sometimes). But I am BP2 Rapid Cycler, one who remains more in the depression side of things. My insomnia is a sign I can't "shut off" what I need to, so I a going to ask doc to replace Nortriptyline with amitrptyline, which gives me a good sleep. Ritalin PRN is just like using benzos prn...when you get those 'days' you need the extra push...it's there and it works. No different than the benzos. Besides, Ritalin doesn't build up to 'theraputic' levels in your blood.

So, for tonight, until I can see my doctor, my Dad has lended me some Doxepin, and I will cut out my Nortriptyline. I've had some very difficult things in my life to deal with this week, so insomnia doesn't help.

Best,
Jay

You could try this homemade algorithm:

1- Take all your clono at night.
2- Ritalin gives me also insomnia. You might try one week without Ritalin and see.
3- Increase Risperdal to 1.5 mg.

I would not touch the Zyp. Its cognitive side effects are worse than Risperdal.

Yup, yup. And Surmontil does the same. God, 10 mg of ami and I couldn't move. And to think my pdoc wanted me to get up to 100 mg. As if!
