Lexapro and apathy

Posted by jessers11581 on April 11, 2005, at 21:02:44

Has anyone else noticed SEVERE apathy with this drug? After being on 20 mg. for a couple of weeks, I stopped exercising, stopped showering regularly, quit my job, began overeating daily and gaining weight, and basically just lost all desire for anything that I used to enjoy (namely taking care of myself). Did Lexapro cause this? I began noticing similar issues while taking 40 mg. of Celexa, but they weren't quite so severe. I am switching to Cymbalta tonight. Wish me luck!

Yes, I am currently on Lexapro and Wellbutrin and I am having a great deal of trouble with amotivation. I am interested in hearing of your experience with Cymbalta. My doctor has recommended, and I'm not sure whether or not to try it. Medication changes are always extremely difficult for me.

Feeling the exact same way on Lex (Lithium, Trazadone and Ativan for sleep). I just found out that I have hypothyroidism, my pdoc has wanted to wait to see how I feel once my thyroid is "stabilized". I want to change to another AD.

Have you had your T3, T4, TSH run just incase?

Not recently, but they were fine the last time I checked. I've suspected thyroid problems several times in the past, but it always tested normal. Good luck to you!

Lexapro did make me a bit apathetic...it also seemed to have triggered sort of an odd situation where I get these aggressive impulses, like I want to hit the person I am talking to for no reason. It seems to be finally fading..

I changed from Lexapro ro Cymbalta several months a go and the change went very smoothly. I went from 60 mg Lexapro to 60 mg Cymbalta. I feel less tired on Cymbalta.

May I ask what you started Lexapro for?

They gave it to me for anxiety/panic attacks and it made me horribly depressed (and cycling BIG time!).

Just curious if you went on it for anxiety as well. Maybe it's so "calming" it causes the opposite effect. I don't know.

I hate that stuff. It made me a total wreck.

I started Lexapro for depression. It does help, but made me sleepy, so the doctor added Wellbutrin. A little better, but still tired and amotivated. Trouble remembering and with cognition.
