migraine headaches and topomax

Posted by Alena on April 7, 2005, at 21:10:59

I am new to this forum, but interested in receiving more information about topomax. Just recently, I was prescribed topomax to help with the prevention of migraine headaches. I am currently taking 25 mg in the a.m and p.m and will double the dosage next week.

I have been on almost every medication possible for migraines and I am curious to see or hear from others if they have had any success with this drug. Will the side effects of this drug outweigh the the several days lost in a month caused from the headaches?

I appreciate any help or info you can offer. Thank you!

I tried Topomax but it made me too dizzy. My M.D. had raised my dose from 25mg once a day to 100mg. It was way too much. I usually take Midrin when I feel the migraine coming on.

Hi Alena -

I just posted the following earlier. http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/20050404/msgs/481366.html

It's an article about using Topomax for migraines. I think the one thing I would be worried about are the possible cognitive problems you may develop. Topomax is sometimes called "Topo-Stupid". Be sure to increase the med slowly.

Welcome!

I was also prescribed topamax for migrains. It helped wonderfully with that. It also caused me to loose 25 lbs (which I thought was a good thing). However, it did give me a little bit of a flat mood feeling, since it is also a mood stabilizer. To get rid of that I dropped my dosage to about 50 to 75 mg, even as low as 25mg. Interesting fact, it will make soda tast like tin (nasty!).

good luck,
dm

Thank you for the input. I do hope I have some success with this medicine. I am so tired of waiting and living for the next migraine. Hopefully, I will have some control over the headaches here shortly.

Alena
