Tegretol or hospital

Posted by alienatari on April 6, 2005, at 1:22:08

Hey all. My doc put me on Tegretol, the extended release form. I have to take 200mg at night and 200 in the morning. he doesnt think that Depakote is working too good. Also im stopping Zyprexa today aswell.
Anyone here have any good experience with Tegretol?
Thanks.

Also. He said if this doesnt work because ive been on so many meds he wants me to go to a psych ward for a month, 2 weeks off meds, and then 2 weeks to work out what my problems are and to find new meds. I dont really want to do this but has anyone here done it and found it good or bad or what? Thanks

sorry no experience with Tegretol but i'm interested to see how things go with you getting off zyprexa. (be careful there).
-i have been in hospital a couple times and for me they were good experiences. it's good that you are monitored daily and people can see what's Really going on with you. -however, i get board VERY easily and after a few days, i was quite restless. so bring things you enjoy -if they'll let you have them. if you are suicidal there are many things they won't allow.

one tip about being admitted to hosptial, if your pdoc doesn't have hospital privaleges then the pdoc 'on call' when you're admitted will be your pdoc while there...make sure he/she is one your pdoc recommends. try to be admitted when they are on call.

best of luck
b2c.

I second what B2C said. The hospital is so boring. However, it is a safe place to take you off meds and try you on new ones.

Tegretol might be the med for you! It's very different from Depekote. I use Tegretol's "cousin", Trileptal and it's the only mood stabilser apart from clonazapam that has worked for me.

Good luck and let us know how it goes. I hope your doctor will allow you enough time to give Tegretol a chance to work.

Maxime

Thanks for the info. Arghh the last time i was in a psych ward i had an awful time. Maybe i was just unlucky. I had people threatning to bash me. One guy said he was going to break my arms .etc. This is a different hospital my doc wants to send me to though.

So far the Tegretol I seem to tollerate well. Hardly any side effects. Im off the Zyprexa now and that intense hunger that i had on it is slowly going thankfully.

Thanks for the info. So far I havent had many side effects from the Tegretol thankfully but its only day 2. I will definatly try Clonazepam if it doesnt work, or even if it does for my anxiety.

Ive been in a psych ward twice before and I totally agree, It is WAY boring lol. I miss the internet heheh. I really dont know about going to hospital for a month, a whole month of my life gone. Plus it would mean id have to drop out of uni this semester. All that work for nothing .etc :(

Wow! Where do you live? Noone stays in the hospital that long to change meds here. You are lucky you can go and have all that monitoring. The weather is nice at least here getting warmer and usually there are less pts in the hospital at this time so maybe they won't be dangerous. If this is what you need then go. As long as you have a good doc, and the right to sign-out if it isn't working out for you. Fondly, Phillipa

Hi

When does your semester end? Surely you could arrange something so that you don't have to drop out. You need to wait about 3 weeks to see if the Tegretol is working. That's good that you haven't had any side effects from the Tegretol. After one day of taking it I couldn't walk a straght line. It made me very dizzy. I tried to wait it out and see if things would improve but they didn't. Then I tried Trileptal and had hardly any side effects (just a little dizzy at first).

I hope this works for you!!

Maxime

Im in Sydney Australia. For some reason i think they like to keep people in hospital for a long time here. I know a guy that was in hospital for 6 weeks! Last time I was in hospital they wanted me to be there for atleast 4 weeks for therapy only and i signed myself out because of all that happened.

Thanks, I think the Tegretol is just giving me nausea and a bit of stomach upset. I do feel a bit dizzy but nothing that bad. So far so good. Im actually sleeping again (with a help of a little xanax). I just really hope the Tegretol works. Doc was saying he wants me off the Depakote once im stabalized on Tegretol.

Hi Alien,

>Also im stopping Zyprexa today aswell....

Taper off Zyprexa if possible, it can cause withdrawal symptoms.
