PLEASE! Good responses to Wellbutrin?

Posted by Steen on April 5, 2005, at 18:45:59

I am just starting Wellbutrin XL 150 once a day tomorrow for post-menopausal problems. I had a total hysterectomy 3 years ago and can't take hormones because I have a family history of breast cancer. I only take a half of bp med, no other meds and have never taken a psych med. I'm nervous about taking Wellbutrin because of the problems posters have discussed, but I need something to help me have more energy like I used to and something that will not squash an already poor sex drive (which is why I do not want to take an SSRI, also the weight gain). I want to feel more like myself prior to the hysterectomy, and not sedated.

Anyway, I'm hoping that someone will respond who has had a good experience with Wellbutrin. I would really appreciate it.

Also, if I do feel nervous and jittery, is it like taking a decongestant that makes you feel like your hair is growing? And how long do the symptoms generally last?

Thanks for your help.
Steen

I am middle-aged, female, and Bipolar Type II. I take Trileptal and Cymbalta and recently added 150mg Wellbutrin XL for amotivation and weight gain. It seems to be helping a little (my libido is definitely up). There is some increased anxiety, but nothing I haven't been able to cope with so far. This seems to be a med that takes quite a while to get used to. I think a lot of folks give up before they've given it a good try. I would not advise starting it if you're an anxious basket case, but if you're coping pretty well it's worth a go. What kind of BP med are you on? Do you mean blood pressure or bipolar?

I took Wellbutrin for many years and at high doses--up to 450 mg a day. At the highest doses it can cause nausea, sweating, rash, headaches, etc. At lower doses the nausea, nervousness can go way, though I always had a problem sleeping at night. It will not help with hot flashes. I think it makes them worse.

It will not squash your sex drive and can give you more energy. You should not gain weight. It is possible your bp (blood pressure?) med is making you tired and adding to your sex drive problems. You might be better off changing that med than adding Wellbutrin. (Just my opinion.)

If you just had a hysterectomy that would throw you into menopause. Are you taking any hormones? Maybe a short course of natural hormones might help too. Fondly, Phillipa

I am not on Wellbutrin and won't scare you with my personal story BUT I have a friend from church on 300 mg's a day and she has:

1) lost about 10 pounds in 6 months on it
2) says she has lots of energy
3) says she is happier than she has been in years

So I know it can be successful for many people. Give it a fair try. It's also kind of known to help increase the libido as well!
