sleep troubles/mourning the mania;)

Posted by Paintmom on April 5, 2005, at 14:03:47

HI
I was newly diagnosed with mild BP...I love this board...forgot my password so couldn't post for a while..but love reading.
The topamax has been great....but the doctor jumped me up from 50 to 100...and I just didn't feel right...so I went down to 75...I still dont feel right and my sleep is all off....I have GREAT difficulty falling a sleep....and when I do....I never sleep straight thru the night...I wake up after three hours and then have trouble falling back a sleep...it's awful...
I was still a little bit manic at 50...but to tell you the truth...I miss my mania a little.....I mean I am 44 and I guess I've had it my whole life...so I kind of don't really know any other way...did anyone else feel this way?..does it take getting used to being level?...I mean the rotten part is the happy high is gone...but the blues still pop up pretty regularly...what's with that????? ( I take a low dose of lexapro and elavil...if I dont' take the elavil...I don't sleep at all)

anyway...love to hear what you all think...esp if you have any sleep solutions...although I have tried most

thanks

Hi, Check out taking 250mg of Keppra at bedtime and see how that works. Right now I'm taking 25mg of dimenhydrinate (motion sickness pills!) at bedtime to keep me asleep and it is working. I rarely have trouble getting to sleep, it is waking early and then being tired all day. Topamax always helped me sleep like a charm when I took it.. I guess everybody's different. Neurontin also worked really well for sleep. It could be that the Topamax is messing up your sleep, and messed up sleep = tired/foggy next day and feeling half-*ssed depressed all the time. The sleep thing HAS to get fixed....

wow...what a great idea...I never thought of taking motion sickness pills...cause they do make me sleepy!!!
Thanks so much...
I agree the sleep thing needs to be fixed.....but no doctor really seems to take it as seriously.

thanks a lot

If the Benadryl route doesn't work, could you ask about Seroquel? Especially since you have a touch of bp.

I know Seroquel is notorious for helping with sleep (it knocked me out), and it's kind of a mood stabilizer/mild antidepressent on top of that.

Just a thought. I hope you find something soon to help you catch your zzzzzzzz's. A good night's sleep is so important.
