getting prescribed an maoi

Posted by mworkman on April 3, 2005, at 21:47:49

What is a good way to get prescribed an maoi by my pdoc? I've already tried several ssri's and clonozepam. Clonozepam worked but i could tell i was getting a tolerance to it. anyway, i ask him about it and he gave me a weird look and aid I couldn't take it with prozac(i was taking at the time) and that people on it had a lot of problems. I was too scared to say anything back, like i could stop taking the prozac. So how can I get prescribed an maoi? He is also like the only pdoc around.

Get thoroughly educated on them and their interactions, say you will wear a special bracelet warning you take an MAOI and be assertive -- it's going in your body, not the doctors/...

Try Nardil first...

Ask him what problems. Ask him if he up to date on lastest information re. MAOIs. Even the dietary restrictions have changed. He is up to date on that?

What happened on the SSRIs? Did they poop out on you?

Collect information on MAOIs and present them to him. Educate him.

I think it's f*cking ridiculous that pdocs will not prescribe these meds. Ask him if he know of a doctor who is more familiar with them .... get him where it hurts the most ... his ego.

MAOIs are safer than TCAs IMHO. I once told my pdoc that I was going to order something from the internet if he didn't let me try it. That worked.

What about a GP? Any decent GPs around?

You say that clonazopam worked but that's a benzo/mood stabiliser. So in what way did it work? What is your diagnosis? How much Prozac were/are you taking? Maybe you need to be on a higher dose. Prozac was the only med that worked for me for a while but I had to take 100 mg of it. I must metabolize meds quickly because I am always on the high end of dosages.

Sorry for firing all these questions at you ...

I'm want to try it for social anxiety. The ssri's just didn't work very well. I don't know of any GP around that would prescribe it.

Find an older pdoc who is familiar with the older drugs. The one I have said she still has people on them. Fondly, Phillipa
