Tardive Dyskinesia from Zyprexa

Posted by alienatari on April 1, 2005, at 2:00:01

Hey all. I had early signs of TD from Solian when I was on it, and now I have been on Zyprexa for a while (probably about 6 months) and I have the same symptoms which are involuntary movements of my mouth and tongue. I bite my tongue every so often from it which sucks. Anyway i dont know what other options I have for my bipolar, I was wondering if anyone has tried a combo of Depakote and Tegretol? I dont know what I should do. I am sure my doctor will just tell me to forget it but thats not right i dont think as I think TD is not something that I want to live with forever. I just dont want to go manic again. So year im on Depakote and Zyprexa only at the moment.

I was put on Zyprexa for a few days last year, until my manic symptoms went away. My doctor told me it was not a good drug to be on long-term as a mood stabalizer, because of risks of developing TD... And as of yet, it IS only classified as an antipsychotic...why dont you ask your doctor about trying a different mood stabalizer- if you do in fact need something in addition to Depakote .?
I do not know your history, i apolagize if I am jumping to conclusions, just thought i'd add my 2 cents.

Hey, also I'm curious, how is Depakote working for you? I was also put on it last year and had a horrible catatonic depressive reaction to it.

good luck! Lydia

Thanks for the reply. Its a bit different here in Australia. Zyprexa has approval for maintanance bipolar therapy now, for both depression and mania. So all the psychatrists are going ape over it lol. Depakote suites me fine I dont really have any side effects from it, not even weight gain, I guess I am lucky. But zyprexa, gosh it has made me gain so much weight. I dont know what my doc will put me on net but I 100% agree with you, antipsychotics in bipolar shouldnt be used long term. Unless of course there is no other option. I dont know, maybe he might put me on Tegretol with Depakote next? Ill have to wait until this coming wedensday but I will post when I find out.
Thanks again and take care.

Hi:
I have no idea at what dosage you got the Zyprexa. However, the higher dosage you're at, the more prone you get 'bad' side-effects, one of which you've gotten.

Here, in the US. most of pdocs. rx'ed the Zyprexa AFTER a trial of mood-stabilzer, ... even M.S. in conjuction with an A.D. Then, it's a sort an suprise in your country, Austria has an aggressive tx on Bipolar. However, in the case of 'severe' form of Bp, like Bp with psychosis, then this form of 'quick' fix method, by using Zyprexa or other 'potent' A.P. for a 'temporary' stabilization. Because, any form of 'psychosis' and 'delusional' are both regarded some 'danger' to the Society in general.

In regard to 'Depakote' for alternative tx, ... I'd also think, ... but Depakote alone might NOT be alleviate the symptoms you have, particularly you have moderate to severe form of Bipolar.

In my suggestion, Depakote and Lithium, both at moderate dosage, somewhere around 750 mg. for the former and 600 - 900 mg. for the later could ease your Bp. However, this combo. seems NOT for every Bper's, because of NO-potency for mid.to severe Bp. Then, you need to talk with your pdoc. before going to change from the Zyprexa to Depakote and Lithium combo. Besides, you may need an A.D., if the depressive side of your Bp hampers your daily activies, i.e., going to work, daily routines and the like.
H.G.
