Lamictal ELIMINATED my itchy scalp problem

Posted by RedSoxFan79 on March 6, 2005, at 21:12:53

I have had a problem for about 8 years now (26yo) of an itchy scalp that break out in red bumps whenever I get stressed out. I have had to take minocyclin which is an antibiotic whenever the bumps flare up and get bad. My dermatologist thinks its acne on the scalp. But whatever, its almost like if Im in a REALLY stressful situation or I panic I can feel my scalp tingle and I know some bumps are gonna flare up in a day or two.

Well anyways, Lamictal has eliminated this problem completely for me. I havent had a breakout in months. Also my mood and socialbility has improved alot also. My scalp is itch free. Anyone have experiences similar to this or know anything to explain this phenomenon?

Just kidding, I'm sorry. Everyone is always talking about the lamictal rash. I'm glad you've had positive results from it and that it has helped you. Drugs affect each of us differently. Fondly, Phillipa

Lamictal is sometimes used for painful migraines and neuropathy. The med relieves those conditions in many so that could explain why you no longer itch as your nerves are desensitized. Perhaps the bumps were contact dermatitis (from you itching all the time) and now that you don't feel itchy you are not aggravating the problem. Also, Lamictal can impact folate metabolism which might cause skin to become dry. Your scalp could have before been oily which is common at your age and now Lamictal has made it dry and less likely to be irritated. Those are just some possibilities but that is awesome that it cured your condition!!!

Thank you for your post. I was hoping someone could give me an answer with some facts or science behind the reason. It really is amazing that lamictal has done this. The red bumps started about a month after two changes in my life happened when I was 18. I took Prozac which was the first med of any kind Id ever been on and also moved to Florida from the northeast. It seems to have dulled my response to stress, but only negative stress.

No problem. From your follow-up the bumps could also have been induced by the Prozac and increase sun exposure in Florida. Prozac like meds SSRI's are notorious for causing severe sensitivity to UV sun exposure. The great thing for you is that Lamictal has not only helped with your scalp condition but is also an excellant anti-depressant for many. It is also used as a mood stabilizer and is the only other med besides Litium approved by the FDA for treatment of Bipolar Disorder. The other anti-convulsant meds used like Neurontin are used off label for Bipolar treatment and don't have as much concrete scientific data as Lamictal...
