Still Have Anxiety! Why?

Posted by Phillipa on February 17, 2005, at 17:46:13

I'm back again. I started the valium 5mg twice a day two days ago, and stopped the total lmg of klonopin. I thought I would experience a feeling of being relaxed like I used to. I even took the valium before my other sleep meds and went to bed to read. I felt nothing. My back always hurts, and I thought the muscle relaxing properties would help with this also. But it doesn't. Any thoughts? I know it's still early. Fondly, Phillipa

Hi Fillipa,

I have been taking 20 mg librium per day and got a script filled a couple of days ago for the same dosage valium 5mgx2. I was hoping to have the effects you wanted to get because that's what I remember about valium also. When do you take it and how do you feel as the drug kicks in? JN

That's the problem. I don't feel it kick in! I am taking 5mg at l0am and the other 5mg at l0pm. Maybe the equivalency charts are correct, and I need l0mg twice a day. I don't think the new pdoc would go along with this. Fondly, Phillipa

Yeah, you might be right. In fact that could be what it is. I checked a few equivalency charts and they were all similar. Valium 10mg=Klonopin.5mg. Why would your PDOC be opposed to this? Have you asked him/her for an increase in the past?

Hey Phillipa,

I switched to valium a couple of times from klonopin (seeing if I would have less depression on valium). Despite what my pdoc said, I found 0.5 mgs of klonopin equals 10 mgs of valium.

Smith

PS it really didn't allieve the depression switching to valium

You may need to give it a little time -- despite what we are led to believe about the fast action of benzo's. I was off Klonopin for 2 1/2 months and it took about a week for the full effects to be evident. Like you, my first reaction was
"Uh, Oh.."

In terms of back pain - it can be a VERY common finding with anxiety suffers. Being able to release the tension that's built up can take time. Heat can help as can a low dose of a muscle relaxant for a brief period.

Unfortunately, we anxiety suffers are not usually long on patience and we tend to be short on trying not to be hyperviligelent.

If time doesn't prove to make things better, I hope you doc will work with your dosing.

Glydin, are you correct! I took the first dose and said "alright now I'm going to be relaxed". Talk about setting yourself up for failure! I see the new pdoc in 2wks., and if this not enough I have no problem seeing if she will increase the doseage. I am a new pt., and she has no baseline as yet. I hope anxiety is what causes my backpain, as I also have osteoporosis from taking synthroid. Fondly, Phillipa

I'm sorry about that. Anxiety is a very likely culprit for your pain and it does take time to see relief with muscle issues related to tension. It almost as if we "program" our muscles and they are stubborn to relearn even after our toxic anxiety is controlled.

Being more at the anti-convulsant end of the benzo scale, I would think klonopin posesses more muscle-relaxant properties than some of the other benzos but I'm just speaking from pure conjecture.

There are other FDA licensed methods for relaxing muscles and reducing things like back pain, depending on your insurance. There are machines (both in physical therapy labs and ones you can use at home) called TENS and interferential units that use small electrical currents to produce non-narcotic pain relief.
