Opinions on Cymbalta

Posted by deepdarkhole on February 4, 2005, at 13:09:04

My dr just took me off of lexapro last week due to an extreme weight gain (40 pounds!). She put me on cymbalta. I had such a terrible time with effexor that I am REALLY scared.

What can I expect for side effects? How long will they last?

Anyone happy with this drug?

Other than weight gain, lexapro gave me my life back!

Well, Ijust started it last week at 30 mg and today started 60 mg. I am also on depakote ER. So far, I can't say I've noticed anything but it's hard to say when you are started on 2 drugs at the same time, (which is doing what). I have lost 6-7 pounds in 1 week and not sure which one is doing this. i figure its the cymbalta because I have heard horror stories about weight gain on depakote or depakote ER but everyone is different. So far for the depression I think its too early to tell for me but I haven't heard anything too bad about this drug.

I've been on it for some time, and have mixed opinion. Before this, I did take Effexor XR for about three years, but had been off it for a while.

Anyway, the start up effects were not all that pleasant, but they weren't all that bad and they did go away pretty quickly. It didn't cause a remission of depression for me, but it did help, and it's great for physical discomfort. At first, it seemed to help with weight loss -- but I'm anorexic, so that's not necessarily a good thing -- but lately I'm thinking it might be involved with some weight gain. (I started in August, so that's what? About six months.) I can't tell, though, since weight gain is a big part of the treatment I'm receiving right now, so it might just be that the treatment is working better than I want it to...

Anyway, I'm in favor of giving it a fair try. For me, with augmentation from Wellbutrin, I jumped into the "responder" catagory within days.

Good luck.

I'm pretty happy so far (almost seven weeks now).

hey! I took cymbalta (60mgs) with Tofranil, then dropped the Tofranil and am now just taking cymbalta as my antidepressant, along with adderall and buspar. It works well; my response to the combo has been maintained by just the cymbalta. Another great thing, for me anyway, is the dosing: basically, there's now work to be done. You take 60mgs or you don't take it, or so it seems. Good luck!
