Anyone heard of this interaction - Yasmin/Lamictal

Posted by wildflower on January 31, 2005, at 9:40:04

I just got my lamictal refilled and received a note from the pharmacist. It said that yasmin (my BC) may decrease the serum concentration and pharmacologic effects of lamictal. If I were to discontinue yasmin, it may cause an increase in serum lamictal concentrations and toxic effects.

Is this common for lamictal?

i've not heard of that. I am on lamictal and yasmin too. It's interesting that you mention that because i just came off the week off period on yasmin and during that week i felt so good it occured to me that maybe it had something to do with not taking the yasmin. Consequently i decided to make a conscious effort this week back on it to see if the mood changes. I've now had two yasmin pills and i do feel crankier. Not a lot but somewhat. This would support what you heard. Very interesting.

I have been on both, however not at the same time.

Yasmin almost destroyed my life and almost cancelled my wedding plans. It changed me into a raging, raving, angry lunatic! I was constantly cranky and moody and hated everybody and life.

All that for an increase in hormones.

You know, I never thought about the week without the yasmin. My mind went directly to the effect of stopping yasmin completely. I'm definitly going to pay attention to this interaction during my next period. I wonder what would conteract this effect? Could it be possible to reverse this by decreasing the lamictal by 25mg during the time that we're not taking yasmin?

The warning was printed off of the Walgreens drug interaction warning. I wonder if this is a new warning or finding? I've been getting prescriptions there for a while and never received this news.

Wow. I've never heard that about yasmin before. Over the last 11 years, I've tried every single pill out there - no joke. Yasmin has given me the least SEs of them all. I suppose this proves the fact that everyone reacts differently to meds. I hope you've been able to find something else that works for you.

i get my yasmin at walgreens also but i haven't bothered to read the interactions info they give you. me bad. it would make sense to reduce the lamictal during that week if one follows the theory of increasing A/D's during pms (this is assuming lamictal works the same way which i have no idea about). i wouldn't drop my dose down because i preferred the mood i had during that week.

good luck!

wildflower-- i've heard a lot about interactions between anticonvulsants and oral contraceptives. i've heard more, though, about anticonvulsants reducing the effectiveness of birth control so that you need higher doses for protection or else a backup form of birth control. i know this is true of depakote and tegretol. funny, though, that when i was on depakote, they tested me all the time for pregnancy and recommended oral contraceptives because i guess depakote is very dangerous to the fetus and can cause birth defects.

i've heard of the interaction between lamictal and oral contraceptives, but i don't think the connection is as definite as with the other anticonvulsants; it's more speculative. the pharmacist mentioned it when i first started lamictal. actually the interaction is more like you described, at least according to what i've been told. the pharmacist has said that i may need a higher dose of contraceptives because lamictal may cause lower levels, not the other way around.

hope this helps.
