Questions about Risperdal

Posted by sdjeff on January 18, 2005, at 1:54:15

Hi,

I might be discontinuing Zyprexa due to Metabolic Syndrome. Risperdal has been suggested. I have a few questions about it. My dx is Major Depressive Disorder with psychotic features and Generalized anxiety Disorder.

1. How is Risperdal on weight? I can handle a few more pounds, but not a lot.

2. Is it good for Anxiety? The Zyprexa keeps anxiety in check for me.

3. Is it sedating or activating? I've had bad luck with Abilify and Geodon. Too activating, agitating.

4. How long does it take to work? Zyprexa took 3 months.

5. Will it increase or decrease my appetite?

That's all for now, thanks.

I can only compare Risperdal to seroquel since it's the only other AP i've taken...it's much less sedating than seroquel, and I would deffinently say it won't be activatin for you. I gained a ton of weight on seroquel, but not risperdal. Might make you more hungry though, especially for sweets & whatnot cuz of the histamine. Worked pretty good for anxiety too, but far too sedating for me.

I'm sure the side effects are different in children but I just wanted to say that when my son took it in combination with celexa and depakote(sp). He gained 40 pounds and was very sedated (just the way his school liked him). I took him off it and he lost the weight in about six months. He was on it for his aggressive and argumentative tendencies which has been somewhat controlled by increasing his depakote and switching to Zoloft. However he is not able to attend public school because of his problem with teachers and students. I took him off Zyprexa because I was told it increased the chance of developing diabetes in children.
