To all NARDIL users (past and present)

Posted by Michael Bell on January 17, 2005, at 18:51:12

The Nardil, which I started about 2 weeks ago, is starting to kick in and do its amazing thing. But the daytime drowsiness is annoying and from what I've heard doesn't go away over time.

So my question is: to all who've used Nardil, what is the safest, most effective adjunctive med for getting rid of the daytime sleepines? Thanks.

I found the safest and easiest remedy was simply coffee. One or two cups about 3 o'clock help with the afternoon sedation. Dr. Quitken told me I could try Dexedrine, but that left me in a hyperdopamanergic state where I felt "high" and almost in a stupor.

The daytime drowsiness does go away...for the most part. I would suggest you carefully monitor your blood sugar. This seemed to help me tremendously..and it prevented the weight gain associated with this med.

Would you mind elaborating on what you did to prevent weight gain on Nardil?

You can't get rid of this side effect. You can either decrease the dosage or go off of the med entirely. You can try with stimulants, but most likely you'll just end up with more anxiety. I've found that the only safe way to get rid of sleepiness is with caffeine...either in pill form or from coffee.
Sleep tight,

Coffee/Caffiene is a reported risk. I only had one hypertensive crisis after eatting celery with blue cheese dip at a wedding. Otherwise I was lucky. I work at a hospital, so I knew if I felt symptoms, could get my blood pressure checked at anytime and get a dose of procardia STAT.

PS Glad to hear your feeling better

Someone in the Yahoo MAOI group reported that his sister had a horrible hypertensive crisis from caffeine. She was just starting out on Parnate though and had two cups of coffee.

No suprise there!!! You wait to the 6 week mark! You will feel like Superman!!

But the daytime drowsiness is annoying and from what I've heard doesn't go away over time.

I disagree. I had EXTREME drowsiness when going up to 90mg...it did go away within 3/4 weeks...I believe that it will subside.

Nothing but patience I think. Time will heal the s/effect in my opinion. Please be patient.

Not advocating it,but i have used caffiene pills plenty of times to augment parnate,as mentioned at times parnate can cause fatigue, the caffiene pills usualy worked extremly well,in fact it seems sedative type drugs came close to any hypertensive crisis than caffiene, and i did read simtulants are used carefully when hypertensive happens, dont they actualy use adrenaline,or am i all mixed up,either way caffiine for me has a positve effect on parnate.

One thing i noticed,is i have to be careful what sedatives i take, benzos, betablockers, ghb are great with parnate to allieave anxiety, but there were some sedatives, nuerontion, thorazine, clonidine, that did not sink well with parnate, and simply made me high,a yapping non stop talking machine,a ugly high noticable to others and carries a bad chrash.

The others though once again, benzos, gabitril, ghb, bete blockers (nice) work fine when parnate alone aint hitting anxiety,in helps put togther a normal feeling, which for me is a high, when i have no anxiety, and can flirt with woman at work, approach people with confidence, brother thats as high as i wanna go!

psssst ,pssst kava in high doses also worked pretty well, dont tell dr bob cause its a herb, hell redirect me.Im joking!

Nardil was the best, most effective anti dep. I have ever expreienced. Not so good, It only remained effective 10yrs, with increasing doses each year. Coffee may be a risk for some on nardil, for me, I learned it was a harmless kicker. It increased the benifit slightly. I will not recomend coffee, or say not to use it.
