Hey, Ed. I guess you are in the UK. I see you asking about stimilants and benzos, so you must be able to obtain them. Do you buy meds on the Net, or have you actually found a UK doc who will prescribe them?

Here in the US that is usually not a problem, but UK docs are notorious for not prescribing them.

Hi!

Yes, I live in England. Valium is the only anxiolytic benzo that most doctors prescribe. It is sometimes possible to get a prescription for a few tablets of Valium, but nothing more.

You are right about stimulants. Most English adult psychiatrists do not prescribe them at all. I have never taken a stim- apart from caffeine! I have never bought any drugs from the net. I'd like to try a stimulant but I doubt I'll get the opportunity. Most pdocs here just prescribe SSRIs and that's about it.

Regards,
Ed.

I've just moved to Britain and would like to start methylphenidate, along with my clonazepam and fluoxetine. Is it going to be hard to find a psychiatrist (whether NHS or private) who will prescribe thoses?

Keith

Hi Keith,

Fluoxetine.... It'll be very easy. SSRIs are very widely prescribed here, even by GPs.

Clonazepam... is only approved for the treatment of epilepsy here. Long term treatment with benzos is frowned upon but since you're already taking clonazepam it should be possible to find somebody who is willing to prescribe it. You will be told that benzos are only a short term solution and that they are not suitable for long term treatment. You may need to go 'doctor shopping' because you otherwise run the risk of being forced to taper the clonazepam.

Methyphenidate....... very few psychiatrists use stimulants in adults at all. Since you're already taking the drug it should be *much* easier to find a willing prescriber though. You may have to go private to a docotor specialising in adult ADD- there are only a few in the country. Most adult pdocs think of ADD as a condition limited to childhood. If you tell them that you have a short attention span this will probably be interpreted as a symptom of depression. If you have narcolepsy it should be easier to get a prescription. The worst case scenario might occur if the stimulant has been prescribed to treat depression. Using stims to augment ADs is taboo here- it is generally considered to be highly inappropriate.

Good luck,
Ed.
