Ok, I'm a worrier. I admit it. I just have to prepare for all possible scenarios. (My friends always laugh at me but whenever we're in any kind of a bind, I'm always the one who is prepared.)

You mean you carry a big purse, and there's a groove in one shoulder?

My motto is "speak softly but carry a big purse".

I have asked this question b/f on this and other message boards. The closest I have gotten to an affirmative answer were posts from people who had read of or heard of other people getting reactions from such and such a food. Never has anyone responded who actually had a food-induced hypertensive crisis while on an MAOI. They just don't seeem to happen very often.

There was a thread earlier here where people spoke about their hypertensive crises from food. I just haven't specifically heard of anyone getting a crisis from food poisoning - except maybe one person who said he or she ate chicken that was a month old. I think it's easier to eliminate the wrong foods than it is to avoid older foods (at least when you go out to eat). The fact that more people aren't reporting this as a problem is definitely a good thing.BTW, that was an excellent post you wrote about people not resenting Parnate.

>I think doctors exaggerate the potential for food interactions with maoi's. I've taken parnate and nardil and eaten everything you're not supposed to(except maybe broiled liver) and i've never felt sick. I think the real danger is in mixing medications with maois. I've heard of people who have been in car accidents and given sedatives and went into comas because the ambulance responders didn't know about the maoi.

I think you're just one of the lucky ones who isn't very sensitive to the tyramine issues. Plenty of other people aren't as lucky. As for comas from ambulances, I think the medication they were given was probably something besides sedatives as they're not contraindicated with MAOIs. It's best to wear a medic alert bracelet or necklace when on an MAOI. Hopefully the medics would check for that before administering medication.
It's good to know that you had no problems on the MAOIs.
This is the end of the thread.
