Anyone tolerate Parnate but not stimulating TCAs?

Posted by KaraS on December 24, 2004, at 14:49:54

I got a fair amount of tachycardia from desipramine and nortrityline so my doctor took me off of them. (My heartrate was 100 bpm.) I'm wondering if I would have the same effect from Parnate. I'd be very interested in hearing if you had the same problem with a stimulating TCA but were able to tolerate Parnate without that problem. (I know that most people find desipramine stimulating, but not nortriptyline, so let's just say desipramine from here on.)

Also, I'd be interested in hearing if any of you got tachycardia from Parnate and had to go off of it because of that.

Thanks.

Kara

Hi!

I've been on lofepramine for two years. It has always caused tachycardia, my heart rate at rest is >100.

No kidding! And you still feel sleepy? I couldn't sleep at all when my heart was racing like that. I had much more energy on it but you don't seem to have that...

Hi Kara,

Yes, I'm still a bit sleepy even though I've reduced my citalopram. I'm not aware of the tachycardia unless I check my pulse so it isn't really a problem! I've been tachycardic for two years!

I also suffered tachycardia on both desipramine and protriptyline. It was typically in the mid 90's, occasionally as high as 110. I really do not think this is worth worrying about unless you have some kind of heart condition. As Ed indicated, I also didn't find it noticeable unless I actually took my pulse. Some doctors use a cutoff of 100, while others will let you go to 110--it depends on the philosophy of your doctor.

My heart rate on 60 mg/day of Parnate is about 70-75, with a BP of about 117/75. This compares to perhaps 138/88 in an unmedicated state. Nardil caused my heartrate to be much lower--typically in the mid 50's, and with a lower BP also. I came very close to fainting on Nardil on several occasions. The stimulant action of Parnate appears to boost both heartrate and BP to counteract these typical MAOI effects quite well. In my case, Parnate seems to be particularly tolerable and well suited to my physiology in this respect.

Hi,

My pulse gets much higher than 110 if i'm nervous- still doesn't cause any symptoms though. My pdoc isn't really interested in my pulse. I guess my tachycardia is party due to me being extremely unfit.

Maybe the citalopram disguises the tachycardic sensations for you. I bet if you weren't on anything else that you'd be acutely aware of the tachycardia. (Better that you're not, though.)

Todd,

Have I told you yet that I love you?

That's just what I wanted to hear! Thanks!

You're very young. You have time to fix that (once you get that motivation going - and I'm sure you'll find a way!)

Hi Kara,

I took the lofepramine without the citalopram for more than 6 months. The tachycardia wasn't a problem then either. The citalopram doesn't seem to affect my pulse.

Ed,
I didn't mean that the citalopram would affect your pulse rate. I just meant that it might be sedating you enough (for want of a better way to describe it) so that you're not as aware of the physical manifestations of the increased heartrate. That's how it worked for me when I was on a sedating tricyclic along with the desipramine. It was much more comfortable and the tachycardia felt less noticeable.

That doesn't seem to be the case for you, however, if you've been on lofepramine without the citalopram and couldn't tell the difference.

Hi Kara

Parnate is known as the stimulating MAOI. But for many people that is not the case. I take 80 mg of Parnate and it causes fatigue with me. In fact I had to start taking adderall to counteract the fatigue. I say fatigue because it wasn't sleepiness. It just makes me exhausted for some reason.

That's interesting. I guess you never know how you're going to react to any medication. Since dopaminergics put me to sleep, I wouldn't be surprised if that's my response to Parnate as well. We'll see I guess. It must still be helping you as an antidepressant since you're staying on it and augmenting with the Adderall - which is a good sign.

Thanks for your input.

Kara
