Weight GAIN on lamictal topamax?? HELP, PLEASE?

Posted by krem on November 30, 2004, at 17:50:13

I started Lamictal maybe two or three mos ago, went very slowly and got up to 400 mgs. There was an app suppressant effect at first.

It seemed to wear off, and then it seemed like lately (past few weeks) I was just RAVENOUS. Dreamed about food, etc.

This week my doc added topamax, starting at 25mg. My appetite is the same, but I'm bloating up.

I'm really worried about this! ADs already made me gain 60 lbs. The doc chose these meds hoping they might at least be weight neutral.

Has anyone had a similar experience, or know what might be happining? Is it temporary? Should I switch? I take Celexa only during PMS and then go off to avoid tipping into hypomania. Doc says weight gain should not happen from that.

Those are the only meds I take. Please help if you can!!!

Thank you!

I switched from Depakote to Lamictal 3 years ago due to side effect of weight gain. I take 600mgs. I sometimes have food dreams and strong cravings if I haven't been eating enough without realizing it.

Hi
It's hard to say if I lost weight on Lamictal. I know at first I stopped gaining weight. I did lose the weight, but a lot of it may have been the result of increased activity due to seizure control. I had been on Lamictal for about a year and still felt fat. Then A "friend" (yeah right) introduced me to methamphetamine. I lost half of my body weight and my mind in 5 months flat. When I stopped using I had gone down 12 dress sizes. I hadn't eaten in almost a month. I was dying. So, I'm back on lamictal. I have gained back a lot of weight. Then I got dx'd with thyroid cancer! My metabolism is shot. I was hypo and still am. So it's really hard to say what caused what. IMHO if you stay on the Lamictal and keep your current activity level or increase your activity level you will probably lose the weight-but not overnight. Not gaining weight is a good way to start losing weight.

Becca, do you have bipolar in addition to seizures?

I had been on Lamictal for about a year and still felt fat. Then A "friend" (yeah right) introduced me to methamphetamine.

I'm not up on a lot of the stims, but is this different from Ritalin?

You're probably right, as long as I'm not gaining weight from it! I'm sorry about the thyroid cancer! They removed your thyroid and put you on thyroid hormone I guess. I hope your doc is good and helps you with keeping your levels up so you can lose the weight. I was briefly hypo and I was all into the research about it. I got my doc from that list of good docs on the about.com site, but I don't see a doc for thyroid anymore since it seemed to only be temporary.

but a lot of the anticonvulsants seem to come with thyroid complaints, I don't know...
