hey-- i can say good and bad things about stimulants. the stronger the stimulant or stimulant-type drug (i started with wellbutrin 450mg, then strattera, then provigil, then concerta (ritalin) and adderall) the more effective for me. they have greatly improved my concentration and have helped with my low energy, at least at first. the downside is that the strong stimulants suppress my appetite so that i forget to eat or even make everything too unpalatable to eat. eventually this leads to less energy because of insufficient nutritional intake. i don't blame stimulants for all the problems i've had recently or for the large amounts of weight loss, but they started the process of deterioration while speeding me up so that i pushed myself harder without enough food to sustain that pace. one recent problem is hypoglycemia, followed by very low blood pressure and very fast pulse, so the end result has been that my brain isn't getting enough glucose or oxygen to function up to par. still, even though the doctors are tapering me off adderall, i feel attached to the drug and will be sorry to be off it. i hope this helps you. good luck, cb

I was on ritalin to augment celexa. It worked *wonderfully* for my depression for about 3 months.
That stuff pooped out so fast, up to 60mg. THe withdrawl was hell on steroids. Sometimes I think I lost energy to breath I was so lethargic.
Some do well, but I would avoid them altogether.
Then again, nothing works for me.

link can you tell me wich drugs have you tried until now? including altenative supplements
why dont you tried to make some studies on your brain ? do you have insurance??
I´ve been like you , veru depressed since the age of 16 , now Im 24 . I found certain kind of relief on my depression but no too much on my Social phobia
When I was 19 , doctors made me a Computerized
Axial Tomography (wrong spelling) , a Magnetic Resonance , and that study I dont know the name in english in which they scan your brain activity , closing your eyes and opening , moving one finger then another etc. .Nothing wrong they found on my brain. Just that my hypofisis gland was a little bit smaller than the average , so doctors found I had low thiroids levels.
You should try something like this link. Just to know more about your brain situation
Dont give up

Actually, no I have not tried lamictal.
Have you? I hear mixed things. I don't know
if its worth the risk of the life threatening rash or whatever.

Yeah, I've tried it. I was really worried about the rash too, though it never developed. I only had to take 25mg and it gave me a huge boost.
Actually it gave me such a huge boost that I went off it. Some of my feelings I felt towards other people suggested I had become a little manic.
It was really potent for me. However, at the time I started it I was also only on 600mg lithium my usual dose of 900mg.
It may be worth a try. I think the chances of developing the rash are pretty low and that it's only life-threatening if you develop it around your throat.

wow, i thought i was the only one who's been on that many meds, and all within the last two years. btw, i've tried lamictal, too, and i'm currently titrating up. after almost two months, i'm only up to 150mg. the steven johnsons risk is relatively high for something so serious (one doctor said 1 in 1000) but it's minimized if you go slow enough. some doctors say to increase by 25mg a week; others say that you can double the dose every two weeks. i've been on lithium 1200-1800mg for a year and a half, but after two hospitalizations for toxicity in october and november, they've taken me off it for awhile. i don't feel anything good from the lamictal yet, but i also haven't crashed or gotten manic or anything, so maybe it's doing something in a subtle way.
here's my list:
lexapro
paxil
effexor
zoloft
wellbutrinlithium
depakote
neurontin
lamictalrisperdal
zyprexa
seroquel
abilify
trilafon
haldolativan
atarax
klonopin
xanax
vistarilambien
trazodone
sonota
restoril
halcionstrattera
provigil
adderall
concertapropranolol (for lithium tremors)
reglan (medication nausea)
compazine (nausea)
zofran (nausea)and, as you said, probably more that i'm forgetting. many times, i've been the first one my psychiatrists have prescribed the drug for. no wonder i feel like a human guinea pig.
would love to hear your thoughts on some of the meds you've tried that i haven't, especially tegretol and other anticonvulsant mood stabilizers. i've been told they wouldn't be good for my kind of bipolar. thanks for posting your list.

what is sinequan? and what did you think of parnate? i would like to try it, but no dr will consider it seriously since there are a lot of interactions and i'm on a ton of other meds. i've heard it's pretty activating, which i need, and that it's a good antidepressant. do you remember if it had an effect on your appetite? also, what did you take atenolol for and how did you find it? i was considering it as an alternative to propranolol, but i don't know what the difference is between the two.
thanks!

Hi,
Sinequan is the brand name for a tricyclic antidepressant called doxepin.

sinqeuan (doxepin) is an old sedating tryciclic antidepressant.
Parnate was very good but I think it made me psychotic. It is very activating, and very dopimanergic.
I used attenolol to counteract the high blood pressure ritalin gave me (I forgot to mention my trials with ritalin and dexedrine, also have to add zopiclone to the list)
