I saw an ad in a psych journal for a drug to be released called sepracor for insomnia. Anyone heard of it and should it be less habit-forming and able to take for longer periods? Thanks

Hi,
You're thinking of the drug eszopiclone. It's very similar to a sleeping drug called zopiclone which is widely used in the UK at the moment. Some doctors do prescribe it as a long term treatment but it can cause dependence.

Sepracor is a drug manufacturer that is awaiting the final go-ahead from the FDA for the drug Estorra, to be used in the treatment of insomnia. Estorra has been tested on more than 2700 adult and elderly subjects and also in more than 60 preclinical studies.
Estorra claims to result in reduced side effects as compared to other sleep aids on the market. It is to be used for adult and elderly patients in the treatment of chronic and transient insomnia.
According to Sepracor, besides reduced side effects, Estorra also has the potential for improved sleep maintenance.
Estorra is a GABA modulator.

Hi,
Sadly, eszopiclone (Estorra) is not an innovation. I seriously doubt that it will have any advantages over zopiclone, a drug which has already gained widespread acceptance as a hypnotic in many parts of the world. Although zopiclone is often used on a long-term basis, dependence may occur. In my opinion, the same will almost undoubtedly be true of eszopiclone, whatever the manufacturer may say. Also, I believe the risk of dependence may be somewhat higher with zopiclone than with zolpidem (Ambien/Stilnoct).
Regards,
Ed.

It's been announced for years now - there have been press releases about vairous trials, applications to the FDA, etc.
Any word on when it will actually hit the shelves and RX's for it can be filled?
