Why is canada so Slow

Posted by linkadge on November 26, 2004, at 18:57:10

The last psychiatric drug that was released in canada was celexa. And do you know the funny thing ???

I have a book that was writtain in 80's (I think early) in which they discribe citalopram as a novel antidepressant compound.

Why must people suffer for close to 20 years while people fool around with making these drugs available.

I understand that I havn't tried all available drugs, but it would be nice to at least have hope that novel things would soon be available, and not something that has been discovered decades ago.

I agree that in Canada we are much slower in making new drugs available to the public. Perhaps Canadians are too conservative or overly cautious. Another thing I find, although my experience is limited, is that I don't think pdocs in Canada are as creative in terms of augmenting strategies and prescribing off-label. That may just be my own narrow experience, however.

I think the canadian government is trying to protect its citizens, by carfully screening all meds before they determine it sutable for the canadian public. They are very carfull in what they alow. Like anything addictive not entering canada. Everything is not that slow, you had zyprexa within a couple years of '96.

All new drugs must first be tested on Americans ;) (nm)

I don't understand why these trials seem to take so long, I know that they have to go through different phases and everything but I still don't understand why it takes so long.

these rTMS trials seem to have been going on forever, since the 80s. About three years ago I rang the Maudsley Clinic about an rTMS trial they were doing and they said it would be another year before they could publish the results, a year later I rang them again and they still hadn't finished and as far as I know they've still not finished now.

I asked the woman that I spoke to on the phone and she said it was all about funding and finding people to participate! That's rich considering they wouldn't eveb allow me to participate because of a seizure I once had. I told her they should advertise the trial a bit better and she got quite arsey with me.

So I ended up travelling to Vancouver to have it, it cost me a lot, didnt't work for me but I never had any seizures so could have got it free in the uk after all!

I guess they don't really see the immergence of the issue.

RU-486 was supposed to be "fast tracked" for psychotic depression. Well if this is "fast tracking" then I hate to think of what the regular process is like.
