Sex and Celexa

Posted by ed_uk on November 26, 2004, at 11:48:16

Hi!

It is well known that SSRIs can reduce libido, sometimes creating an indifference to sex. Personally, I find that when my libido is reduced by an SSRI, the idea of having sex starts to seem rather unpleasant! In the absence of desire, the process of sex may be viewed as being somewhat 'unhygenic'.

Has anyone on psycho-babble had a similar experience with an SSRI?

Ed.

On celexa, I feel that sex is unpleasant, lower brainstem and barbaric.

I haven't had sex since starting celexa, 3 years ago. I'm getting worried.

I know what you mean, sometimes I feel almost asexual! I still find people attractive in a way but don't generally want to have sex.

I hear your concept of asexual. Sometimes I think I will just divide like a cell.

Um, I think you are all male, correct?
If so, this may be a gender thing.
For me (a female....although I too sometimes think I'm merely an amoeba!) Celexa first caused anorgasmia. A complete and total lack of sensitivity, numb!! (Is that clear enough to everyone???).
After a while of that, I began to lose interest in sex. No libido. Then came the sense of "doing my marital duty". I think that part (the low sex drive) for myself was basically a PSYCHOLOGICAL response to long term anorgasmia. I'm not sure that it's a neuro-chemical type response.

Could there be a gender difference? No libido for males vs no orgasm/sensitivity for females??

This, and other persistent side effects, is why I've recently stopped Celexa.

SSRi's can cause loss of sexual sensitivity both pysical and psychological. The effect is equal between males and females.

After starting an SSRI, how long do the sexual side effects take to set in? sensual and psychological?

JayDee:
About 3-4 weeks before anorgasmia started. Became progressively worse with use.
Not everyone experiences this...my daughter takes 3 X more Celexa than I was taking and has NO s/e's whatsoever!

Not an ssri, but how about remeron?

You really pinpointed something with your post about sex becoming "unhygienic".
That's exactly how I feel on remeron. So much so, the husband is getting restless...
Makes me wonder, in the long run is being fat and frigid better than panic attacks. Hmmm.

No, but my pulse would probably go before my libido...

Even so, SSRIs should be avoided by most people IMO, because they all invariably have adverse effects on sex drive and potency. I think the danger is that many people will not notice these effects because they are rather mild and appear gradually.

I feel the most sorry for people with severe OCD. They basically have choice between OCD and chemical castration.
